About the Item

BERNARD LORJOU – "PIROUETTE AU GALOP" ⚜ Woodcut ⚜ Hand Signed Lower Left ⚜ Numbered H.C. from the Edition of 80 ⚜ Conservation Frame ENERGY AND DRAMA FROM “LE CIRQUE” Created in 1978, "Pirouette au Galop" is part of Bernard Lorjou’s celebrated Le Cirque series. Executed in bold black and orange, the composition depicts a horse in full gallop with an acrobat vaulting overhead — a scene bursting with movement and theatrical intensity. The strong graphic contrasts and simplified forms demonstrate Lorjou’s mastery of woodcut, a medium that suited his vigorous style and uncompromising approach to subject matter. This example is especially significant: inscribed as a personal gift, it was issued as an H.C. (hors commerce) impression — prints reserved for the artist and not intended for general sale. As such, this work carries a greater rarity and personal connection than standard numbered impressions. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Rare H.C. impression, inscribed by Lorjou as a gift — not part of the standard edition of 80 ✓ Powerful image from the Le Cirque series, showcasing Lorjou’s fascination with performance and spectacle ✓ Dynamic composition in bold black and red, emphasizing motion and theatrical drama ✓ Excellent condition, with conservation frame and linen matting ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: "Pirouette au Galop" ▸ Artist: Bernard Lorjou ▸ Medium: Woodcut ▸ Creation Date: 1978 ▸ Country of Creation: France ▸ Signature: Hand signed lower left ▸ Edition: H.C. from the edition size of 80 (inscribed gift impression) ▸ Provenance: Private Collection ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Image Size: 15.75 x 21.5 inches — ◼︎ Paper Size: 22.25 x 30 inches — ◻︎ Frame Size: 28 x 33.5 x 1 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent condition. INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Document THE ARTIST: Bernard Lorjou (1908–1986) was a French painter, printmaker, and co-founder of the Expressionist movement L’Homme Témoin (“The Witness”). Known for his bold colors, dramatic compositions, and fearless treatment of social and political themes, Lorjou was both a painter of monumental canvases and a master of printmaking. His works span subjects from religious allegory to contemporary conflict, often marked by a sense of urgency and intensity. Throughout his career, Lorjou exhibited alongside artists such as Georges Rouault, Bernard Buffet, and Jean Carzou, yet his approach remained singularly his own — vehement, uncompromising, and deeply humanist. He rejected abstraction in favor of figurative expression, believing art should directly confront the social realities of its time. His works are housed in major institutions including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, affirming his position within 20th-century modernism. Collectors prize Lorjou’s graphic works, particularly his woodcuts and lithographs, for their raw energy, immediacy, and rarity — qualities strongly embodied in Pirouette au Galop.
