Damien Hirst
Lepidine

2008

About the Item

"Lepidine" captures Damien Hirst’s fascination with creating beauty through structure. Part of his iconic "Spots" series, this shimmering grid of vibrant colors set against a silver backdrop invites viewers to experience joy through a system that appears scientific but feels surprisingly emotional. Hirst originally developed the "Spots" to challenge the expressive traditions of painting, aiming to build a "machine" for making art, yet the spontaneous appeal of color choices reveals that emotion is impossible to fully contain. In "Lepidine," the push and pull between control and feeling is palpable, making it one of the more dynamic and striking works in the Spots series. Each spot is a different color; the spacing and placement are mathematically even, creating a sense of systematic rhythm. Fun Fact about the Name: Lepidine is also the name of a chemical compound, specifically an organic molecule (a quinoline derivative). This is the 99th edition of the limited 150 edition print. It is signed on the front in the bottom right corner. It has been framed in a white shadowbox with a thin face and a roughly 1.5-2" profile. Provenance: Gagosian Gallery.
