Each issue combined original lithographs with poetry and essays accompanying exhibitions at Galerie Maeght. The 1964 issue, No. 149, celebrated the clarity and rigor of postwar abstraction, featuring works by Ellsworth Kelly, a leading figure in minimalism and color field painting. Through its exceptional production and collaborations with the foremost artists of the 20th century—including Braque, Miro, Chagall, Leger, Bonnard, and Chillida—Derriere le Miroir became a benchmark of modern printmaking and artistic publishing. About the artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker associated with hard-edge painting, color field painting, and minimalism. His work demonstrates unassuming precision and restraint, emphasizing pure line, form, and color. Born in Newburgh, New York, Kelly studied at the Pratt Institute before serving in World War II, where his exposure to European architecture profoundly shaped his aesthetic vocabulary. After the war, he lived in Paris from 1948 to 1954, developing a style of abstraction informed by Byzantine art, Romanesque frescoes, and natural forms. Kelly’s work evolved into a sophisticated exploration of visual relationships—where simplicity achieved monumental impact. Upon returning to the United States, he became a central figure in postwar abstraction, bridging European modernism and American minimalism. In November 2019, Kelly’s Red Curve VII sold for $9.8 million USD at Christie’s New York, setting a world record for the artist. His legacy endures as one of the most influential voices in modern abstraction, redefining how color, shape, and space interact.
