About the Item

Frank Stella's work references many of the key developments or movements in post-war American art; Op Art, hard-edge abstraction, conceptual art, and Minimalism. His iconic concentric squares are the ultimate symbol of the artist and these aesthetic and conceptual ideas. "Fortin de las Flores" draws its name from a lush and vibrant town in Veracruz, Mexico. For Stella, the connection between the artwork and the title is often ambiguous or even arbitrary. The title might reference a topic, character, or place relevant to the artist at the time of creating the work but doesn't necessarily have a direct link to the artwork itself. In this composition, Stella renders interlocking concentric bands in bold, contrasting hues that disrupt the symmetry of the geometric forms. The result is a striking interplay between color and shape that creates the illusion of shifting depths and dynamic movement. When you look at these forms, do you see a shape that is coiling into its center or are you looking downwards on a pyramid? "Fortin de las Flores" is part of the "Jasper's Dilemma" series that pays hommage to Jasper Johns. The series examines the tension between vivid color and greyscale, a point of investigation that both artists engage with in their work, particularly in their prints. Click here to see another example from this series realized in greyscale. This work is arguably the "best of category" as it has a double square colorful composition. Questions about this piece?
