About the Item

Frank Stella's work references many of the key developments or movements in post-war American art; Op Art, hard-edge abstraction, conceptual art and Minimalism. His iconic concentric squares are perhaps the ultimate vector of these aesthetic and conceptual ideas. "Hyena Stomp" draws its name from the jazz composition "Hyena Stomp" by Jelly Roll Morton. The artist was inspired by the rhythm, energy, and improvisational nature of jazz music, which served as a strong influence throughout his ouevre. For Stella, the connection between the artwork and the title is often ambiguous or even arbitrary. The title might reference a topic or character relevant to the artist at the time of creating the work, but doesn't necessarily have a direct link to the artwork itself. The organized geometry and strict pattern of black and white "sounds" more like techno than jazz. "Hyena Stomp" is part of the "Jasper's Dilemma" series and references Jasper Johns. Stella is acknowledging the tension between vivid color and greyscale that both artists explore in their work, especially in their prints. Like many of Stella's lithographs, the artist used a lithographic crayon to create the illusion that the works have been hand-sketched. This example, the first from the series, is especially interesting as it initially appears to be simply black and white. In fact, it was created using five shades of gray, cream, and black.
