About the Item

Red Eye #6 continues the inward journey of At the Center of Seeing, shifting from fiery intensity toward a more diffused, radiant glow. At its center, a soft golden orb hovers like an afterimage of light burned into vision—a sun, a halo, an iris dissolving into luminosity. Around it, darker forms arch and frame the glowing core, evoking both the anatomy of sight and the architecture of portals or thresholds. Below, mirrored shapes hint at a spectral face, a presence hovering between figuration and abstraction. This work opens into warmth and expansion, as if the eye were not collapsing inward but radiating outward, casting its energy into the world. It suggests that perception is not only about receiving but also about emanating—a dialogue of light between the inner and the outer. This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image and paper size is 28" x 16" with hand torn edges. Signed within the image, lower right. Framing is recommended before shipping. All work is shipped flat, not rolled. In this recent work, the artist has focused on the production of abstract painterly images using a variety of digital methods and processes. These new images are at, what he calls, the “Center of Seeing” - closeups of a moment in time and space from the center of his digitally made kaleidoscopic videos. These captured images contain circle, star, or other primal geometric shapes – some resembling mandalas or flowers of a new interior space. Spiritual, psychological, with an emanating quality of light, they are vaguely familiar yet new. Mr. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant. His first solo show was at White Columns, New York City in 2003. His last solo show “I’ll Take you There” was at the Olympia Project, Bushwick, in 2020. His studio is located in the Flower District in Manhattan.

Pupil #5, 2022, digitally made abstract print, edition of 3, signed
By Gary Cruz
Located in New York, NY
In Pupil #5, this composition feels more iconographic and symbolic, almost altar-like. The eye has become less about perception and more about presence—an emblem or vessel holding meaning. At the center-bottom, a pale, egg-shaped form rises above a deep violet structure that resembles both a heart and a pair of unfurling scrolls. This motif carries associations of birth, fertility, and transformation, as if the pupil has turned inward to reveal a seed of becoming. Above it, faint concentric rings form a flower-like pattern, encircled by delicate white marks that suggest both orbiting satellites and the notches of a clock. Time, in this work, feels suspended, it hovers in a state of expectancy, like the pause before emergence. The muted palette—lavender, rose, smoky brown—further emphasizes the contemplative quality. Pupil #5 reads like an inner diagram of potential, a moment of quiet before transformation. In the language of the series, it occupies the space between measurement and blossoming: the seed of sight itself, holding within it both time and vision yet to unfold. This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image size is 28" x 16" with a 1" white border...
