About the Item

"Poissons volants bleus" (Blue flying fish) by Georges Braque from Guillaume Apollinaire's “Si je mourais là-bas” (If I die there). The portfolio was published on the occasion of Georges Braque's 80th birthday. It contains 18 colour woodcuts by Georges Braque (May 1960 - October 1962) and eleven poems by Guillaume Apollinaire "Poèmes à Louise de C.-C." (December 1914 - September 1915). The present copy is inscribed, dated and signed in pencil below the image on the left. Sheet size: 47,5 x 36 cm Image size: 39,3 x 28,3 cm Literature: Vallier 181 p. 253 Georges Braque (Argenteuil 1882–1963 Paris) is one of the great and important artists of the twentieth century and left behind an impressive oeuvre. In addition to his paintings, a number of outstanding prints are among the highlights of his work. From the very beginning, he devoted his attention and passion to his graphic oeuvre and explored the artistic possibilities of printmaking techniques. Flowers, Greek profiles, teapots, apples, lemons and birds are his preferred motifs, and he repeatedly illustrates important literary works. In their reduction of form and the renunciation of everything descriptive and superfluous, the works reveal a high level of poetic expressiveness. The majority of his prints was created after the Second World War. Braque’s works now revealed softer lines, the partial reintroduction of naturalistic forms, and an emphasis on the intrinsic material value of colour and surface.
