Harold Town (1924-1990) is renowned in Canada for his prolific, versatile and dynamic body of work.
Town was dubbed the "Picasso of Canada" for his ever-changing aesthetic and perennial creativity.
In the mid 1950's he established his reputation with a series of monotypes (called "Single Autographic Prints") which included elements of collage.
While Town became one of the leading artists of the Painters Eleven group, he had an important and lifelong connection to printmaking.
As an artist he fearlessly experimented with different media and aesthetics - consider how different his "Toy Horse" is from his "Single Autographic Prints" or even his "Superstar" works.
While Town had made major accomplishments in abstraction, the stretch series was a major departure from previous non-figurative works. Interestingly when he debuted the "Stretch" works they were initially met with critical ambivalence.
Harold Town's oeuvre has little connection to minimalism, in fact Town can be understood as a maximalist, always aiming for extravagance and bravado.
This example from the Stretch Series, holds an exuberant dynamism that makes it stand out amongst its siblings. The turquoise and bright red palette has an elegance that is unmistakably Harold Town.
Today, the Stretch series look remarkably contemporary. For the uninitiated, many assume this body of work to be brand new.

Harold Town
Harold Town remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the Painters Eleven group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists, who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting. Somewhat ironically, his first significant body of work, which established his reputation as a group of monotypes - which he called Single Autographic Prints. Town was introduced to lithography by fellow painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen. The Single Autographic Prints were first exhibited in 1954. Two years later the National Gallery of Canada would successfully nominate him to represent the nation at the Venice Biennale. By the end of the decade, Town received international accolades for these works and had become one of the most admired artists in Canada. This complex mauve-hued example of a Single Autographic Print is Harold Town at his best; layered, rich colors creating a hypnotic inimitable abstract surface. This type of SAP is particularly sought-after as it is one of the earliest and features a distinct graphic collage-like composition made up of blocky shapes. Such elements would become signatures in Town's oeuvre. An essential work for any collection of post-war Canadian abstraction.

Dan Christensen (1942-2007) is widely recognized as one of America’s foremost color abstractionists. Over the course of forty years as an artist, Christensen was devoted to exploring and expanding the constantly shifting trends of 20th century abstraction.
Christensen established his reputation at the end of the 1960s, as began using spray guns to create colorful stacks, loops, and lines in his artworks. This body of work was considered by the legendary art critic Clement Greenberg among the most original abstract paintings of the decade.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who dedicated their practice to a signature style, Christensen was unrelentingly curious and allowed his dynamic version of abstraction to evolve as he tried new techniques and aesthetics.
During the 1980's and 1990's in particular, Christensen focused on experimenting with different forms of washing, spraying, and layering colours over top of each other. The works from Christensen's late period combine the gestural drama of Abstract Expressionism with the stained surface look popularized by the color field artists.
