Printed by Atelier Mourlot, Paris, France and published by and for the French Government and the General Committee for Tourism. The image featured on this poster is Matisse's 1950 gouache and cut out "La Danseuse Créole". The image playfully portrays Katherine Dunham, American dancer and choreographer, of whom Matisse saw perform. Provenance: private collection - Boca Raton, FL. Sheet size: 39" x 24.5" Image size: 32.5" x 19.38". UV staining to paper. Scattered light handling creases and edge wear. Colors somewhat attenuated. In overall fair condition. "La Danseuse Créole" was created by Matisse in 1950. Matisse based the abstract cut-out (gouache découpée) figure on the well-known dancer Katherine Dunham, an American dancer and choreographer, often referred to as the "matriarch and queen mother of black dance", Katherine inspired Matisse with her confidence and strength whose modern dance routines were influenced by dances from Africa and Haiti. Ms. Dunham had been invited to perform in Matisse’s studio. He created Creole Dancer from the sketches he made while she was dancing. The green patches, and blue and white leaves that appear to be arching across the work represent her body with the leaves symbolizing the feathers she often wore on her outfits. On the top of the arching body is a floating head, seeming to flow with the rest of the abstract shape. As the viewer gazing upon the colorful dancer, we are treated to what seems like a private performance. The work was completed in a single day, using left over bits of paper. "La Danseuse Créole" was donated to the Musee Matisse in 1953. Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse (French: 31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Along with Picasso, Matisse helped to define and influence radical contemporary art in the 20th century. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.
