Joan Miró
Foldout from catalogue for 'Terres de grand feu' lithograph by Joan Miró

1956

About the Item

Joan Miró produced this original lithograph especially for the catalogue for an exhibition of his and Josep Llorens Artigas' collaborative work at the Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York. It is an excellent example of his mid-century work and features his signature mark-making techniques, symbols, and bold color choices. The images here contain the main motifs of another of his lithographs, printed separately under the title 'The Birds' (no. 241). The prints that Miró designed for his own publications should be understood as part of a long tradition; artists have been producing prints to be published in books and other publications since the advent of printmaking techniques. Albrecht Dürer, for example, made multiple illustrations for the Bible in the fifteenth century, as did the majority of his contemporary printmakers. In the modern period, artists ranging from Wassily Kandinsky to Thomas Hart Benton have taken their hand to the book as a medium. Even more, many of the most celebrated images by artists like Winslow Homer were printed for illustrated journals — and only a few examples survive today because of the perceived disposability of the medium during the 19th century. The images Miró made for the catalogs of his own body of work and career offer an insight into how the artist understood his own biography and place in history. They are self-aware and carry with them the Surrealism of his early career, but also the sophistication and refinement of an artist who had been exploring and experimenting for decades. Original lithograph produced especially for: Bernier, Rosamond, Joan Miró, and Josep Llorens Artigas. Miró, Artigas: terres de grand feu (Miró, Artigas: Sculpture in Ceramic). "Elizabeth Stein Gallery A/P, " Lithograph Exhibition Poster by Ilya Bolotowsky
By Ilya Bolotowsky
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Elizabeth Stein Gallery A/P" is a color lithograph poster by Ilya Bolotowsky. This piece features an abstract and geometric design in yellow. 40" x 26" Born in Russia in 1907, Ilya Bolotowsky left his native country in his early childhood. The family was forced to emigrate as a result of his parent’s anti-Communist sentiments. They traveled first to Constantinople, then settled in New York City in 1923. Bolotowsky enrolled at the National Academy of Design in 1924. He tried out many styles in this period, ranging from the representational and classical to the abstract and expressionistic. In the early 1930s he became a designer of textiles. In 1932 Bolotowsky spent ten months in Europe. Although he was already familiar with prevailing modernist movements, the opportunity to study a wide range of these works and to meet some of the artists who had made them affected Bolotowsky profoundly. As a result of this trip, Bolotowsky began to synthesize aspects of Cubism with the abstract Surrealism of artists like Miro and Arp. These softer, floating forms gave way to a rectilinear geometry as he became more influenced by the Constructivists and Mondrian. Upon his return to the United States, Bolotowsky married his fellow painter Esphyr Slobodkina...
