About the Item

Caviar20 is thrilled to be offering the work of Louise Nevelson. "Moon Garden" is a superb example of one of her impressive molded reliefs in black paper pulp. Although Nevelson is best known as a sculptor, she expanded her practice by exploring different branches of printmaking throughout her career. As a printmaker Nevelson was particularly curious, consistently experimenting with different techniques, materials at different printmaking studios. "Moon Garden" is a paradigm of Nevelson's visual language, demonstrating how she was able to "translate" or extend her sculpture into printmaking. She utilized the technique of cast paper, whereby paper fibre or pulp is formed into a mold, creating a relief. The striking shapes and features of the work have Nevelson's signature arrangements, forms and texture. "Moon Garden" (and Nevelon's paper pulp works in general) have an aesthetic duality. There is something both ancient and futuristic in the forms and overall aesthetic. The work alludes to African art, hieroglyphs, cubism and utopian or post-apocalyptic architecture. Completed in her signature monochromatic black, the raised height and/or depth of the shapes accentuates their mysterious composition from the dark background. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
