Artist Biography: Richard E. Fluhr was born in New York City in 1955 and moved to Texas to work as an artist. Beginning with ceramics at age 15 and showing at Ola Podrida Gallery in Dallas, he moved on to the University of Texas at Austin. Fluhr received his BFA from the University of Houston followed by an MFA in printmaking at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he graduated magna cum laude. He traveled extensively, painting life along the way in watercolor, oil or acrylic, usually on recycled materials, such as paper bags, pamphlets, and receipts. Fluhr exhibited in six galleries in the United States and several galleries in Mexico, where he also maintained a studio in the late 1980s. His art has been shown in the U.S., Russia, and Mexico and is represented in over 900 private and public collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI; the Detroit Art...

Tessuto Veneziano (c-5/10) contemporary bstract etching and chine colle print
Located in New York, NY
Printmaker Ann Aspinwall made this etching in 1999, while living in Venice. During those years she did several etchings that adhered to a certain principle. She drew a freehand line, as straight as possible; and beneath that line drew another, following as closely as possible the one above. Each successive line followed the line directly above, imitating all the curves and shakes. These imperfections, or deviations from the original line, became more and more prominent, each line being an interpretation of what came before it.
Around that time, Aspinwall discovered the writing of John Dewey on the subject of rhythm in his Art as Experience (1934):
Rhythm, writes Dewey, is an “ordered variation of changes.” There is no rhythm “when there is a uniformly even flow, with no variations of intensity or speed,” when “variations of pulse and rest do not occur.” “Variations of intensity are relative to the subject matter directly experienced. Each beat, in differentiating a part within the whole, adds to the force of what went before while creating a suspense that is a demand for something to come. It is not a variation in a single feature but a modulation of the entire pervasive and unifying qualitative substratum.”
Ten years later Aspinwall returned to this plate. Looking at it again after a long time she perceived the strong influence of Venice; the texture calls to mind water and fabric. The artist was unable to decide on one color for an edition, so after printing many color proofs, she chose ten combinations of colored lines on colored Japanese papers. In the patterns of the arable fields to the jali's (carved screens) in the architecture. This work is however not romantic nor nostalgic but shows a deeper rooted need to offer a visual heritage of place, of where the artist is from and the journey that he is taking. The results are both compelling and honest.

His Father is a craftsman who fixed and mended farm machinery and understood the working parts in the processes. Sharma followed in his Father’s footsteps, as is often the case in Indian families, but his was not the machines of the fields but the presses of the printing studio.
Like his Father, Mukesh Sharma is fascinated with understanding how things work and how he can manipulate the metal in his hands. It is not surprising then that his medium of choice is printing. One of the most physically challenging of all the practices, it can often be physically challenging as well as technical and detailed.
In his youth, Sharma would draw with stones on walls and floors. He was lucky his family encouraged this and he is grateful for his early art-training at the Jaipur School of Art but it was at the Baroda Art Department that he was introduced to the great printing traditions of Jyoti Bhatt...

Luisa Duarte’s works has a strong connection with her Latin American roots, with special focus in the geometrical abstract movement, a movement adopted by Latin America during the late 50’s. It was very prominent in Venezuela. Probably the most prominent collection of geometric abstract art was given to MOMA by Patricia Phelps de Cisneros who now resides in the USA.
Her works are focused on explorations of shapes, lines , color and also on memories of her childhood in a promising country. Those memories are transformed into dynamic works invoking good energies to bring back what we have lost.
In these complex geometrical systems, objects intersect, merge and collide, producing negative spaces that call the viewer to attention. In some cases, the almost imperceptibly off-kilter placement of geometrical elements within a composition speaks to her emphasis on relationships - the objects always exist in relationship to each other.
There is a constant interest in constructing and deconstructing, and the consideration of endless juxtapositions.

Martínez Lanz finds her inspiration in nature, and more recently, she’s been exploring themes as diverse as art, music and mathematics from passages found in the Gödel, Escher, Bach book.
Martínez Lanz often develops her own materials, incorporates found-objects in her work, and experiments with new techniques based on trial and error. Her work is continuously seeking a dialogue with the materials that she transforms. Beauty, order, form and color are her go-to elements to find a feeling or an emotion which is the main goal of her work.
