Pablo Picasso
From the Book "Dans L'atelier de Picasso" (by Jamie Sabartes)

About

This little portrait of a faun by Picasso is a lithographic reproduction of a drawing by Pablo Picasso. The craftsman that reproduced the drawing by hand was Henri Deschamps, Picasso’s favorite and most trusted master printer at the Mourlot Studio. He relied on Deschamps any time that a painting or drawing had to be reproduced and it was not an already original print. They collaborated very closely from 1945 until the death of the artist in 1973. This small lithograph is an “after” as it was reproduced by a craftsman while the artist was alive and had to be supervised and approved by the artist himself. In the case, this beautiful little gem of a lithograph was created for the book: Dans L’atelier de Picasso – which was written by Picasso’s secretary and close friend Sabartes and published and printed by Editions Mourlot. It included 14 original lithographs and dozens of reproductions of paintings and drawings. Each book was signed by Picasso on the justification page in red Pencil. However, none of the lithographs inside were ever signed Certificate of Provenance: Each individual work of art carefully curated by Mourlot Editions comes with a Certificate of Provenance, signed, dated, stamped, and numbered by Eric Mourlot. Stored in a clear protective sleeve accompanying your piece, this certificate guarantees the origin and authenticity of your personal lithograph.

About Pablo Picasso (Artist)

One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art.

Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and expressionism.

“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In his Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.

He made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.
