About the Item

PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) Motifs no.7 (A.R. 459), 1963 Ed. 40/150 pcs White earthenware clay, decoration in engobes and enamel, knife engraved under glaze D. 25 cm I D. 9 7/8 in Inscribed and numbered on the back : No.7, Edition Picasso, 40/150, Madoura Picasso : Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947-1971, by Alain Ramié, Editions Madoura, Vallauris, 1988, illustrated under no.459, p.242. From his very first visit to Vallauris—a charming town in the South of France affectionately known as "the city of a hundred potters"—Pablo Picasso was instantly captivated by the artistic possibilities offered by ceramics. The town’s rich pottery traditions and the expressive, hands-on nature of the medium struck a deep chord with the artist, inspiring a new phase of creative exploration. Eager to immerse himself in this form of artistic expression, Picasso began a close and fruitful collaboration in 1947 with Georges and Suzanne Ramié, the founders of the renowned Madoura Atelier. This partnership not only allowed him to experiment freely with forms, textures, and glazes but also marked the beginning of a prolific period in his life that extended for more than two decades, resulting in the creation of hundreds of unique ceramic works that expanded the boundaries of the medium.
