About the Item

This exceptional lithograph by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Poeme pour Georges Braque (C. 124; M. 401) (Poem for Georges Braque), was published in Derriere le Miroir, Nos. 144–145–146, 1964, as part of L’Hommage a Georges Braque. Created as a memorial gesture to his lifelong friend and collaborator, this work fuses image and tribute in one powerful statement. Picasso’s bold graphic sensibility, distilled through line and movement, conveys both artistic kinship and personal loss—his homage to Braque, co-founder of Cubism and fellow explorer of modern form. Lithograph on velin paper. Paper Size: 15 × 22 inches (38.1 × 55.9 cm), with centerfold, as issued. Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Catalogue raisonne references: • Goeppert, Sebastian, et al. Pablo Picasso, The Illustrated Books: Catalogue Raisonne, Patrick Cramer, Geneva, 1983, illustration 124. • Picasso, Pablo, and Fernand Mourlot. Picasso Lithographs, translated by Jean Didry, Boston Book and Art Publisher, 1970, illustration 401. Notes: From the folio, Derriere le Miroir, L’Hommage a Georges Braque, Nos. 144–145–146, 1964. Published by Aime Maeght, Editeur, Paris; printed by Les Ateliers de Maeght Editeur, Levallois, May 13, 1964. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French): Taken from this special issue of “Behind the Mirror,” CCCL examples on velin de Rives were numbered, constituting the original edition of L’Hommage a Georges Braque. These deluxe examples also included an etching based on Trois oiseaux sur fond violet. The lithographs for this issue were printed in the ateliers of Maeght Editeur, Levallois. The text was printed by Fequet et Baudier, typographers. Finished printing May 13, 1964. Artwork details: Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: Poeme pour Georges Braque (C. 124; M. 401) (Poem for Georges Braque) Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 15 × 22 inches (38.1 × 55.9 cm), with centerfold, as issued Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1964 Publisher: Aime Maeght, Editeur, Paris Printer: Les Ateliers de Maeght Editeur, Levallois Catalogue References: Cramer 124; Mourlot 401 Condition: Well preserved condition, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Derriere le Miroir, L’Hommage a Georges Braque, Nos. 144–145–146, 1964 Notes on publication: Under the direction of Aime Maeght, Derriere le Miroir (“Behind the Mirror”) became a landmark of postwar art publishing. Each issue paired original lithographs with literary or poetic texts, serving as both exhibition catalog and autonomous work of art. The 1964 triple issue L’Hommage a Georges Braque was conceived following Braque’s death, with contributions by leading artists of the Maeght circle—Picasso, Chagall, Giacometti, Chillida, Tal-Coat, and Ubac—each offering a personal reflection on Braque’s life and legacy. Picasso’s Poeme pour Georges Braque (Poem for Georges Braque)—printed with centerfold as issued—is a visual meditation on form and friendship. The composition unites abstract geometry with organic vitality, echoing the Cubist dialogue he once shared with Braque. At once elegy and continuation, the lithograph captures the enduring spirit of innovation that defined their collaboration and reshaped 20th-century art. About the artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer who spent most of his life in France. Universally recognized as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Picasso co-founded Cubism alongside Georges Braque, transforming the structure of visual language through fragmentation, multiple perspectives, and abstraction. His innovations spanned every medium, including painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, and graphic arts. Among his most significant works are Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937), each emblematic of modernism’s revolutionary break from tradition. His prolific output—marked by constant reinvention—spanned the Blue and Rose Periods, Analytical and Synthetic Cubism, Neoclassicism, and Surrealism. Picasso’s influence extended far beyond aesthetics, shaping cultural and political discourse throughout the 20th century. In May 2015, his Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) sold for $179.4 million USD at Christie’s New York, setting a world record for the artist and one of the highest prices ever paid for a painting.
