Printed by Norman Lassiter and Steve Mairano at the New York Institute of Technology, with blind stamp Richard Anuszkiewicz Biography I'm interested in making something romantic out of a very, very mechanistic geometry. Geometry and color represent to me an idealized classical place that's very clear and very pure. -Richard Anuskiewicz Richard Anuszkiewicz received his bachelor’s degree from Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio in 1953. He studied at Yale University School of Art and Architecture in New Haven, Connecticut from 1953 to 1955, where he earned his Masters of Fine Arts. His works were included in the seminal 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art and along with Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley; he was considered a pioneer of the Optical Art Movement. Life magazine called him “The New Wizard of Op.” While Anuszkiewicz is known for his important developments as an Op Artist, his paintings also call fourth other associations; mainly the rigorous color theory of his mentor Josef Albers. Anuszkiewicz activates the space around his vividly chromatic squares with diagonals radiating lines to suggest volumes of depth. His paintings explore the optical properties of color; challenging the eye of each viewer while investigating formal, structural and color effects His work is included in many important public and private collections including The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY, The Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington, DC, Denver Museum of Art, Denver, CO, Detroit Institute of Art, Denver, CO, Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC., Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.

  • FACE, from Portfolio 9m Classic 1960s Op Art lithograph signed/n renowned artist
    By Henry Pearson

Henry Pearson FACE, from Portfolio 9, 1964 Color lithograph with deckled edges Signed, titled, and numbered 84/100 in graphite pencil on the front; with publishers' blind stamp 17 1/2 × 22 1/10 inches Publisher Irwin Hollander, with blindstamp Hand Signed and Numbered 84/100 with Irwin Hollander (printer) Blindstamp Unframed Henry Pearson's iconic Pop Art lithograph "Face" from the mid-Sixties is in the permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art as well as other public institutions. This Classic Sixties psychedelic designed Op Art lithograph was created as part of the legendary 'Portfolio 9' in 1967 - one of the most influential eras in 20th century art. It was housed in a gray cloth-colored box with maroon paper inner panels and a large maroon "9" designed by Richard Lindner on the cover. Portfolio 9 featured nine of the most important artists of the era, representative of the three major trends: Pop Art, Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism: Roy Lichtenstein, Saul Steinberg, Richard Lindner, Robert Motherwell, Henry Pearson, Louise Nevelson, Sam Francis, Willem de Kooning- and Ellsworth Kelly. The Introduction to the portfolio was written by Una E. Johnson, Curator of Prints & Drawings, The Brooklyn Museum. Johnson wrote in 1967 for the colophon page: "The artists were selected to demonstrate the great diversity and character of lithography in the United States today... the dialogue of diverse forms and many faceted idioms that compose this graphic journal mirror the eloquence and delight the strengths and caprices of a period. Furthermore, they reflect in fine measure the creative achievements of artists attuned to their time." The lithograph offered here has superb provenance: it comes directly from 'Portfolio 9', numbered 84/100. This is the very first time since 1967 that this hand signed & numbered print will be separated from the original portfolio presentation box. According to the description of this print in the catalogue raisonne, "Organized as a celebration of Irwin Hollander's collaboration with American artists working in the medium of lithography, the Portfolio 9 is a compendium of images by nine of Hollander's artist collaborators. Henry Pearson Biography: Henry Pearson was born in Kinston, North Carolina in 1914. He studied art at the University of North Carolina where he received his B. A. and later at Yale University where he received an M. F. A. Pearson spent over eleven years in the army during and after WWII. On one tour of duty in Japan he was assigned to interpret topographical maps due to his past training in Theatrical Set Design. He returned to Japan on another tour after the war in order to immerse himself more fully in the culture. Pearson returned to the United States in 1953 and enrolled at the Art Students League in New York where he studied with Reginald Marsh. The Op-Art Movement was beginning to gain popularity and Pearson...

Richard Anuszkiewicz Soft Satellite Red, 1981 Silkscreen on wove paper Signed, dated and numbered 53 from the edition of 100 in pencil by the artist on the front. Bears label from Metzenbaum campaign on back of frame Vintage metal period frame included Terrific 1980s Op Art silkscreen, pencil signed and numbered from the limited edition of only 100. This work is framed in its original vintage frame, and bears the label from the campaign for Metzenbaum for Senator - the longtime Democratic Senator from the state of Ohio, along with a biographical blurb on the artist. Don't forget that Anuszkiewicz studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art in the 1950s before studying with Albers at Yale - so it is not surprising that he would contribute this work several decades later to support a liberal politician from Ohio - where he once studied. (Anuszkiewicz was born in Eerie Pennsylvania). Measurements: Framed: 36 x 36 x 0.5 inches Artwork: 35 x 35 inches Provenance: Originally sold to raise funds for Senator Metzenbaum's campaign. Victor Vasarely was a French-Hungarian artist credited as the grandfather and leader of the Op Art movement. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in his work Vega-Nor (1969). Vasarely’s method of painting borrowed from a range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism. Born Győző Vásárhelyi on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, he briefly studied medicine, but after two years he dedicated himself to learn academic painting. In the late 1920s, Vasarely enrolled at the Muhely Academy in Budapest, where the syllabus was largely based on Walter Gropius’s Bauhaus school in Germany. After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked in advertising agencies to support himself as a graphic artist while creating many works including Zebra (1937), which is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op Art. The artist experimented in a style based in Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s, before arriving at his hallmark checkerboard paintings...

  • Untitled #1, 1964 from New York Ten
    By Mon Levinson
    Located in New York, NY
This dynamic work was realized by the esteemed 20th Century modern artist Mon Levinson in 1964. The work was realized in 1964, and printed in 1965 by Chiron Press in New York- the same year that Levinson was included in the seminal Op-Art exhibition "The Responsive Eye", alongside contemporary luminaries such as Bridget Riley. An identical work from this edition resides in the permanent collection of the New York MoMA. This mixed media work consists of an translucent vinyl sheet layered over a print- part etching, part lithograph. The clear vinyl sheet is embossed with a tight pattern of sinuously curved repeating black lines and is subtly raised in places- creating a subtle three dimensionality and dynamic sense of movement. The paper is inscribed with the same recurring pattern of snaking black lines, like a fine filigree, with two weighty black geometric forms that appear to crowd the composition. Smaller geometric forms reside within creating the apparition of negative space in the bone hued paper. The juxtaposition of the delicate texture and colossal feeling forms imbues the piece with a stunning dynamism and tension, helping to explain why Levinson is among the most influential and important artist to come out of the Op Art movement. His work is in the permanent collections of important institutions around the world including the Museum of Modern Art as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Signed by the artist and marked 18/200. The work comes presented in a custom walnut and white gilt frame...
