About the Item
This poster was produced in 1973 to promote a Richard Hamilton exhibition at the Davison Art Center, Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, USA. The poster reproduces The critic laughs 1971−2 which consists of the white barrel of an electric toothbrush derived from a Braun model on which a naturalistically coloured plastic cast of an upper denture has been positioned in place of a brush head. This is presented in a specially designed presentation case with a stand (so the barrel can be displayed standing within the case), along with an accompanying instruction manual and guarantee card mimicking those that accompanied contemporary Braun electrical products. The box was produced by the company that modelled prototypes for Braun and was based on the packaging for the Braun ‘sixtant’ electric razor. In place of the brand name on the barrel of the toothbrush is a Letraset logo adopting the appearance of Braun’s trademark that reads ‘hamilton’. Hamilton was a fan of Braun design director Dieter Rams.
This poster is not previously owned and has been stored in the archives of Petersburg Press since its publication.

Instead of observing flowers in nature, Andy Warhol found his botanical inspiration in a 1964 issue of Modern Photography. He transformed a photograph of hibiscus blossoms into a technicolor series of silkscreens, each simply titled Flowers and debuted at the influential Leo Castelli Gallery later that same year. Silkscreens from that exhibition have since sold for over $2 million at auction. While they evoke the Flower Power movement of the 1960s, Warhol’s Flowers have also be interpreted as a symbol of mourning, as the artist created these works just after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination...
