About the Item

Richard Serra (1938-2024) is one of the most important and audacious sculptors of the 20th century. One of the leading exponents of Minimalism, Serra's steel sculptures stand in unshakable equilibrium, defying expectations and the logic of gravity. While his forms are minimal, their size and weight are always grand and imposing. His sculptures are increasingly site-specific and rarely domestically proportioned. Over the course of his career, Serra has occasionally turned to printmaking as an alternate and complementary mode of expression. Many of his editions are done monochromatically, in black. “Swivel” was produced in conjunction with an exhibition (Constantin Brancuse and Richard Serra) held at Fondation Beyeler, Switzerland, in 2011. The print depicts concentric scribbles, which combine to form a hive-like shape, punctuated by textured ink on the rest of the plate. Here, Serra considers torsion–the twisting of an object by torque. This is a notion that is at the forefront of his sculptural output at the time. Full of depth and movement, "Swivel" is a delightful example of Serra's printmaking practice. Because of their limited output, Serra's prints perform strongly on the secondary market. Work by Richard Serra is held in important public and private collections worldwide. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
