About the painting:
This piece is inspired by Summer Bloom, an ongoing series that Shizico Yi has worked on every summer, painting en plein air in her garden, in this instance, painted into the night.
She began gardening in 2015 to create a healing space for her elderly, ailing Labrador. After her dog, Favor passed away, the memorial garden became both a sanctuary and an enduring source of inspiration—offering solace through grief and a place of continual artistic renewal.
This Artist’s Proof captures an August night, with moonlight illuminating the herbaceous border. It took Shizico more than a year to perfect the delicate technique of applying gold leaf to giclée paper without air bubbles, a notoriously difficult process. The result reflects her commitment to overcoming material challenges in order to create museum-quality works on paper that preserve the integrity of her brushstrokes while remaining accessible to collectors.
Gold leaf—one of her signature materials—symbolises not only the warmth and light of the season, but also serves as a visual language through which she explores space and time in two dimensions. The materials, colours, and concepts of this series infuse her landscapes with a quiet, magical aura.
This body of work is a testament to Shizico’s ever-evolving technique, bold imagination, and the profound inspiration she draws from the natural world—especially her own gardens, which she reshapes as a living canvas. Through these personal landscapes, the painting invites viewers to connect with their own internal, imagined terrains of memory landscape.

Dr. Shizico Yi, the UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories . With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
