Street Art Abstract Prints
STREET ART STYLE
Street art is a style created for city walls, subway trains and other public spaces. Sometimes it is commissioned, yet most often it is an individual statement of defiant free expression. Although mostly an urban style, street art can be found all over the world, including JR’s pasted portraits on the separation wall in Palestine, Invader’s playful ceramic tile mosaics in Paris and the provocative stencil and spray-paint works by Banksy in London.
The Philadelphia-based Cornbread — aka Darryl McCray — is considered the first modern graffiti artist. He began tagging his name around the city in the 1960s. Graffiti art later flourished in New York City in the 1970s. There, young artists used spray paint and markers to create tags and large-scale graphic works, with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring both developing their distinctive styles through the graffiti scene, which would evolve into street art. Artists such as Tracy 168 and Lady Pink pioneered the Wild Style of complex graffiti writing in the 1980s, pushing the movement forward.
Because of its unsanctioned, improvisational and frequently covert nature, street art involves a range of techniques and aesthetics. Some street artists use quick and effective stenciling, whereas others wheat-paste posters, commandeer video projectors or freehand draw elaborate illustrations and murals. Shepard Fairey made his mark with street art stickers before designing the iconic “Hope” poster for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.
While the origins of street art are rooted in a strictly noncommercial creative act that confronted political issues, sexuality and more for a general audience of passersby, the art form has moved inside the galleries over the years. Today, just as Basquiat and Haring took their works from Manhattan’s Lower East Side alleyways into Soho galleries, artists including KAWS, Barry McGee and Osgemeos are in demand with collectors of fine art.

About Stephen Powers
A Fulbright scholar who has been awarded many public commissions and exhibited in major institutions like the Brooklyn Museum.... Born and raised in Philadelphia’s Overbrook neighborhood, Stephen Powers (b. 1968, Philadelphia) moved to New York in 1994, where he gained attention as the publisher of On the Go magazine and the author of the graffiti history The Art of Getting Over. In 1997, Powers undertook an ambitious and far-reaching graffiti campaign of his own, using the official-sounding acronym ESPO (Exterior Surface Painting Outreach) to deflect attention from the illegality of his activities. By 1999, he had covered dozens of storefront grates with giant silver block lettering. Powers gave up street graffiti the following year to concentrate on studio-based projects.
Powers’s work typically fuses word and image in paintings and graphics that evoke the bright look of a handmade bodega and fairground...

In 2020, Rick “geezy” Williams took an art form he loved for more than two decades and elevated it into a form of self-care. The Detroit native — also known for his prowess in the fashion and creative industries — had already spent 26 years hoofing, better known as tap dancing, with his talent landing him time with the legends of the artform. But at the height of the pandemic, he turned to “The Dance” for more than self-expression. One day at five in the morning, Williams donned his tap shoes and rocked for four hours straight. The morning gave him a shot of new life and inspiration, which was in short supply as the world was shutting down from COVID-19. “The Dance” quickly became a daily meditative practice, an opportunity for him to focus on gratitude and connect with The Most High. Raised in the Pico-Union Central Area of Los Angeles, KARLOS MARQUEZ has been contributing to the local LA art scene since 1983 when he created his first Graffiti Art pieces with friends under the name “Kartoon”. In 1985 he joined K2S (Kill 2 Succeed) graffiti crew as one of the original members. He continued to develop his style by studying art at Los Angeles City College and Associates of Art in Sherman Oaks where he studied life drawing and full figure drawing with Mark Westermoe. Due to his keen eye for detail and his polished technique he has collaborated with some of the most prolific Graffiti artists and artists in the world including Joe “Prime” Reza and Kris Cunz.
