VASARELY CENTER NY was printed in 4 color offset lithography on heavyweight commercial printing paper. Poster is in overall good condition, slight handling on margins, slight age toning, wrinkle in center image. Op-Art geometric design consisting of squares and a round central sphere utilizing a color palette of yellow, gray, gold brown, black, and white creating a mesmerizing optical Illusion.
VASARELY CENTER NY is a rare 1970s offset lithograph poster after an original artwork - "Zussau" gold version, by the renowned Op-Art master artist Victor Vasarely (Vásárhelyi Győző, Hungarian, 1906-1997). Made exclusively for the opening of the Vasarely Center on Madison Avenue in New York, 1978. Poster published by VCNY (Vasarely Center New York), New York, 1978.
About the Artist -
Victor Vasarely (Vásárhelyi Győző) (1906 -1997) was a French Hungarian-born artist often acclaimed as the father of Op-art. Working as a graphic artist in the 1930s he created what is considered the first Op-art piece Zebra, consisting of curving black and white stripes, indicating the direction his work would take. Over the next two decades, Vasarely developed his style of geometric abstract art and gained international renown.
Born in Pecs, Hungary on April 9, 1906 Vasarely was raised in Budapest, and took up medical studies ay Budapest University in 1925. Two years later, he abandoned medicine to study painting at Polini-Volkmann Academy, and later at the Mülheny, where he expanded his studies in graphic art. He married fellow student Claire Spinner in 1930 and they had two sons; around this time they left Hungary and moved to Paris, where he worked as a creative consultant in advertising.
At the end of the Second World War, he opened an atelier in Arcueil, and began to focus on his more geometric paintings and prints, beginning to refine his spatial problem-solving on both flat surfaces and in three dimensional sculpting. He would later evolve his style to include optical illusion based on the research of constructivist and Bauhaus pioneers. Mathematical elements played throughout his pieces as well as his techniques, and he was eventually dubbed the inventor and creator of Op-Art.
Vasarely received the Guggenheim Prize, French Chevalier de L’Ordre de la Legion d’Honneur, Art Critics Prize (Brussels), and the Gold Medal at the Milan Trienalle. His works are found at the Vasarely Museums in Hungary and France, as well as various collections throughout the world. He died in Paris on March 15, 1997.

Victor Vasarely
Widely considered the grandfather of Op art, the French-Hungarian painter Victor Vasarely (1906–97) created eye-popping geometric abstractions that play with the viewer’s perception of depth, perspective and motion. A classic example is the 1937 Zebra, which consists of undulating black and white stripes that suggest the form of the titular animal through optical trickery. The work is often credited as the earliest Op art painting.
Such illusions were more than pleasing tricks for Vasarely, who insisted that “pure form and pure color can signify the world.” He wanted to “democratize” art by producing works in large editions at reasonable prices that were understandable across national and cultural boundaries. In the 1960s, he developed an alphabet plastique, or fine art alphabet, consisting of elementary visual building blocks that could be used in endless combinations to create original compositions. By employing this universal visual vocabulary and stripping away topical references, he sought to create what he called a “Planetary Folklore.”
Embodying Vasarely’s singular belief that art should serve a social function, accessible to all, these innovations may perhaps be his greatest contribution to 20th-century art.

About the artist-
Yona Lotan (1926-1998) Jewish engineer and painter was born in Lithuania.
His family moved to Tel-Aviv, Palestine in 1936. He served as a high-ranking officer in the Israeli Army and fought in the War of Independence. In 1959 Yona Lotan began painting; he's considered a self-taught, outsider artist.
Lotan always had the unquenchable desire to draw. His one-man shows in Israel and Geneva were so successful that he left the army, sold all his belongings and moved to Paris in 1960 in order to devote his life to painting.
His art was vibrant and he became well known, not only in Europe, but also in the United States.
In 1965 he won the coveted Prize of Foreign Painting given by the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
Along with Maryan, Avigdor Arikha, Mordechai Ardon and Yaacov Agam. he was part of a group of Jewish emigre
artists who worked in Paris.
