About the Item

In the summer of 1896, Figaro Illustré, one of the most elegant and widely circulated French illustrated periodicals, released a special number devoted to a subject close to the heart of Paris: the cafés-concerts. At the peak of the Belle Époque, these vibrant, often decadent venues formed the soul of nocturnal entertainment — where chansonniers, cabaret performers, and glittering demi-mondaines mingled with bourgeois patrons beneath gaslight and trees. For this jubilant theme, Figaro Illustré turned to none other than Alphonse Mucha, the undisputed master of Art Nouveau and the visual chronicler of Paris’s theatrical and decorative spirit. Mucha’s cover illustration is a feast of light, movement, and elegance: a fashionable woman — radiant in a cloud-like ruffled blouse and crowned with a floral hat — raises her arms in delighted gesture, perhaps calling for an encore, or toasting the spectacle of life itself. Behind her, the shaded terrace of a garden café blooms with silhouettes and suggestions: of whispered conversations, idle laughter, clinking glasses, and the haunting echo of chanson. The composition is marked by Mucha’s signature sinuous lines, exquisite detail, and sophisticated color palette — rich in dusk tones and blushed highlights that capture the fleeting glamour of summer nights in Paris. The typography itself becomes part of the visual composition, with FIGARO and ILLUSTRÉ nestled seamlessly into the scene, and Mucha’s signature gracefully embedded in the tablecloth. The entire piece is both advertisement and art, editorial and emblem, a perfect embodiment of the fusion between high culture and popular entertainment that characterized turn-of-the-century France. Published in June 1896, this issue was priced at 3 francs, and distributed by Le Figaro and Boussod, Valadon & Cie, leaders in fine art publishing. The magazine inside featured stories, artworks, and commentary on the world of cafés-concerts — at once nostalgic and celebratory, drawing a portrait of a cultural moment now long vanished. Today, this original lithographed cover stands as a quintessential example of Mucha’s genius in capturing the spirit of his age — equal parts bohemian romance and refined artistry. For collectors, scholars, and lovers of Mucha or Parisian modernity, it remains a visual icon of the Belle Époque’s intoxicating elegance.
