About the Item

Dated May 25, 1898, this red-toned Obligation au Porteur is among the first iterations in this legendary Mucha-designed series. Issued at 5% for a face value of 500 francs, the document was part of a larger initiative to fund the Paris-France department store enterprise—one of many growing pillars of consumer culture during the fin-de-siècle. Here, Mucha’s artwork is printed in rich brick red ink, lending a warm and almost ceremonial aura to the figures depicted. The design is tightly composed but emotionally expansive: one woman gazes outward thoughtfully, another leans on her elbow in contemplation, while others engage with tools and symbols of modernity. It's a scene of industry meeting introspection—of economic drive balanced by aesthetic stillness. At the time of this bond’s creation, Alphonse Mucha was not simply an illustrator; he was a cultural force. His designs were everywhere—in advertising, packaging, book illustrations, and even government documents. He believed deeply in the spiritual power of art to elevate everyday life. This bond, with its precision printing and ornamental finesse, is not just a certificate—it is an object of visual poetry, still resonant more than a century later.
