Alphonse Mucha
1898 poster Mucha Gismondo - Les Maîtres de l'affiche Pl.27

1898

About the Item

Alphonse Mucha's "Gismonda" poster, featured as Plate 27 in "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche," stands as a testament to the harmonious convergence of visual arts and theatrical brilliance. Created in 1898 for Sarah Bernhardt's production at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, this iconic piece encapsulates Mucha's distinctive Art Nouveau style and his dynamic collaboration with the legendary actress. Central to the composition is the captivating portrayal of Sarah Bernhardt as Gismonda, the eponymous character in Victorien Sardou's play. Mucha masterfully captures Bernhardt's ethereal beauty, presenting her as a symbol of grace and sophistication. The poster, with its elongated lines and sinuous curves, reflects Mucha's signature style, characterized by organic forms and intricate details. Typography is elegantly incorporated, with the play's title and Bernhardt's name gracefully integrated into the design. The lettering, echoing the sinuous lines of the artwork, adds a harmonious balance to the overall composition. "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche," curated by Jules Chéret, showcased the finest posters of its time, democratizing art for a broader audience. Mucha's "Gismonda," presented as a part of this prestigious collection, solidifies its place as a masterpiece, not only for its artistic brilliance but also for its historical significance. Circa 1900 Original poster for the Tillier dance Troup at the Palais de Glace
Located in PARIS, FR
The girl who has entered the theatrical profession as a child can be depended upon to lead a clean life when she grows up. She is far, far safer than the girl who enters the profession after childhood.' So wrote John Tiller, whose theatrical school produced the dancing ladies who starred in the original 'Pony Ballet' and whose troupes of 'Tiller Girls' were in great demand for shows not only in London but in Paris, Amsterdam, Turin, and New York. He and Mrs. Tiller began training youngsters at the age of nine. In the schools in London and Manchester, the girls had regular academic studies as well as dancing and were placed in Christmas pantomimes when still children. When they grew up, they were given jobs in various Tiller troupes (each managed by a mature woman who watched out for them)... [This lithograph]... was intended for all of the Tiller Troupe performances. The black type at the bottom was surprinted later to indicate, in this instance, their appearance at the Palais de Glace...
