About the Item

A pair of 18th century hand colored copperplate engravings entitled "Felis Leo Linn Femina" and "Rhinoceros Unicornis Linn" from Dr. Johann Schreber's Die Saugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur (Mammals in Pictures after Nature). They were drawn by Johann Elias Ridinger (1698–1767). "Felis Leo Linn Femina" depicting a lioness and her two cubs is Plate XCVIIB and was engraved by H. I. Thyroff. "Rhinoceros Unicornis Linn" depicting an endangered Indian rhinoceros is Plate LXXVII and was engraved by Georg Paul Nussbiegel (1713-1776). These hand colored engravings are presented in identical beautiful burl wood frames and double mats. They would make an attractive display grouping. Each frame measures 17" x 14.57" x 0.88". They can be purchased separately, if preferred, for $650/each. Send us a message if you would like to purchase one of these prints to initiate the process. Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber (1739–1810) was appointed professor of materia medica at the University of Erlangen in 1769. In 1774, he began writing a multivolume set of books entitled Die Säugethiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen, which focused on the mammals of the world. Many of the animals included were given a scientific name for the first time, following the binomial system of Carl Linnaeus. From 1791 until his death in 1810, he was the president of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1787 and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1775. Schreber also wrote on entomology, notably Schreberi Novae Species Insectorvm. His herbarium collection has been preserved in the Botanische Staatssammlung München since 1813.

A Pair of Framed 19th Century Colored Lithographs of Tudor Scenes by Joseph Nash
By Joseph Nash
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a pair of framed 19th century tinted lithographs with hand-coloring entitled "Gallery Over the Hall, Knowle, Kent" and "Terrace Bramshill, Hants" by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) after drawings by Joseph Nash (1809-1878), from "Mansions of England in the Olden Time", published in London in 1839-1849. Nash's publication consists of a series of views of Tudor domestic architecture, which Nash said depicted "the most characteristic features of the domestic architecture of the Tudor Age, and also illustrating the costumes, habits, and recreations of our ancestors." The scenes of the aristocratic ladies and gentlemen (including Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I), who are depicted inhabiting the rooms of these great houses, were taken directly from the portraits on the walls. Charles Joseph Hullmandel, was involved in the creation of these lithographs. He was a famous British lithographer, who invented the "lithotint" process, which he named and patented in 1840. This technique, allowing for greater nuance and value gradation than pure lithography, was an ideal means of expression for Nash's historically rich and picturesque depictions of Tudor mansions and their inhabitants. Hullmandel is also remembered for creating many lithographs from the paintings by J. M. W. Turner. The "Gallery Over the Hall" depicts a great hall with children playing with skittles (wooden pins resembling bowling pins), a doll and what looks to be a St Charles spaniel, while a lady in Tudor attire watches over them next to a massive stone fireplace. Adults are watching from in the distance while a man bows...
