About the Item

This plate is unique both for the unmistakable beauty of the bird species and for the great scientific and artistic skill of Elisabeth and Jhon Gould to have rendered it. The price quoted highlights the brilliance of the colors, the excellent state of conservation, and the fact that the print is coeval. We also point out that we have placed other prints from the same series on the platform; hanging the collection as a whole would be one of the most elegant, striking and spectacular decorative walls ever imagined. The pair of artists and scientists embarked on an adventurous journey; imagine the difficulty of the time even today. Moreover, with this suite, Elisabeth and Jhon Gould, both watercolourists and ornithologists, show incredible foresight and intelligence in choosing which subjects to shoot. The plate belongs to the spectacular and fascinating collection The Birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan Islands, consisting of 320 hand-painted lithographic works. This work was published in twenty-five parts; Gould died after the release of the twentieth, and the work was followed by Dr Bowdler Sharp, who also completed The Birds of Asia. William Hart, Gould's frequent collaborator on other collections, executed most of the lithographs.
