About the Item
Gymkhana Umbrella Races Rockaway Hunting Club is from the portfolio entitled Sporting Incidents: Being a Collection of sixteen plates done in color..representing the most important events of the track, field and road. It depicts several horses and their riders with umbrellas in a polo field getting ready for their event and a gentleman standing in the right foreground with his back to the viewer. The portfolio contained 16 different prints with an edition of 1000 printed in 1893. The subjects varied from hunting, polo, coaching, and steeplechase with an emphasis on the benefits these pastimes had on character and behavior and of course health. This collection of color printed heliotypes were published in New York by T. Thomas 1893, printed by the Heliotype Printing Co.,
and painted by W.S. Vanderbilt Allen,the respected American sporting artist. This print is in fair condition with some outside corners missing and a repaired tear that goes thru the word THE that can be seen in one of the photos. Will look well when framed.
