About the Item

ADRIANA OLIVER - SOMEONE TO LOVE Date of creation: 2021 Medium: 6 layer screen print on Somerset velvet paper Edition: 75 Size: 86 x 72 cm Condition: In mint conditions Description: This limited edition of Someone to Love by Adriana Oliver includes 75 hand-signed and numbered screen prints on high-quality Somerset Velvet paper of 300gsm. Someone to Love is a work by Adriana Oliver that encapsulates her distinctive style within contemporary Pop Art, exploring the longing for love and connection through a female portrait. The piece reflects the artist’s minimalist sensitivity, where the absence of facial features in the protagonist allows the image to transcend individuality and become a universal symbol. In this piece, Oliver presents a woman with a refined aesthetic, defined by simple shapes and soft colors that evoke nostalgia and timelessness. The female silhouette is recognizable, yet the omission of facial features invites the viewer to project their own interpretation onto the depicted figure. The choice of a palette with neutral and muted tones, characteristic of Oliver’s work, reinforces the sense of intimacy and reflection. The composition maintains the visual elegance of her style, with clean lines and a minimalist approach reminiscent of iconic portraits from classic cinema. The title Someone to Love suggests an exploration of the human desire for affection and connection. The representation of a woman without defined features strengthens the idea that love is both a universal and personal experience. The protagonist of the piece could be anyone, and in her anonymity lies her power: her image reflects the shared longing to be loved and to find someone to love. Through this work, Oliver conveys a sense of both melancholy and hope. The simplicity of the portrait, rather than detracting from its depth, enhances its emotional impact, leaving the interpretation open to the viewer regarding the story behind the female figure. ABOUT THE ARTIST Adriana Oliver is one of the most prominent contemporary artists today. Born in Barcelona in 1990, her work has established itself within the Pop Art movement, with a fresh and minimalist approach that explores identity, stereotypes, and gender roles. Her artwork, characterized by human figures devoid of facial features, evokes deep emotions and reflections, leaving space for viewers to project their own experiences onto the pieces. From an early age, Oliver was surrounded by an artistic environment that nurtured her interest in the visual arts. Initially, she was drawn to photography, a discipline that allowed her to develop a sensitivity for composition and visual storytelling. However, over time, she felt the need for a more personal and unrestricted form of expression, which led her to painting. This transition enabled her to explore more complex and nuanced themes, solidifying her visual language. Oliver's style is distinguished by her use of muted color blocks and thick outlines that define human figures. These figures, often inspired by classic films from the 1950s and 1960s, lack defined facial features, allowing their representations to be universal. This deliberate omission invites viewers to project their own interpretations and emotions onto the artwork. The influence of cinema is evident in her compositions, which often resemble frozen frames in time. Her background in photography has also played a crucial role in her creative process, providing a precise approach to structure and framing in her paintings. Adriana Oliver’s work is deeply connected to the exploration of identity and gender roles in contemporary society. By stripping her figures of individual features, she emphasizes the archetypal nature of representations of masculinity and femininity. Her works challenge social stereotypes and examine the tension between individual and collective identity in an era dominated by media representation. Her color palette, composed of neutral and muted tones, reinforces a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. These subtle colors contribute to the introspective atmosphere of her paintings, inviting silent reflection on the human condition. Throughout her career, Oliver has exhibited in various cities around the world, including Tokyo, Taipei, London, Basel, and São Paulo. These exhibitions have strengthened her reputation in the contemporary art scene and allowed her work to be appreciated on an international scale. In addition to her exhibitions in galleries and art fairs, she has collaborated with fashion brands such as the Japanese label ADAM ET ROPÉ, blending her art with textile design. These collaborations have enabled her work to reach a broader audience, taking her artistic vision beyond the canvas. Oliver’s creative process is meticulous and structured. She often uses digital tools to sketch her ideas before transferring them to the canvas. This methodology allows her to experiment with shapes and colors until achieving the desired composition. She then applies acrylic paint with precision, creating the characteristic minimalist effect of her work. Her approach to color and composition is heavily influenced by her experience in photography, resulting in a careful use of negative space and a well-balanced visual aesthetic in each piece. Adriana Oliver’s work has been recognized for its ability to combine an appealing aesthetic with a profound exploration of sociocultural issues. Her reinterpretation of Pop Art from a contemporary and feminist perspective has been praised by art critics and experts. By offering a fresh perspective on identity and representation in visual culture, Oliver has positioned herself as a key figure in the contemporary art scene. Her work continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, ensuring her relevance in today’s art world.

"Did I know Her?" Print 28 × 20 in. Edition 1/10 by Kate Garner
By Kate Garner
Located in Culver City, CA
"Did I know Her?" Print 28 × 20 in. Edition 1/10 by Kate Garner Signed and numbered by the artist. Not framed. Ships in a tube. Kate Garner is an English photographer, fine artist, and singer. Garner has photographed a wide range of musicians and celebrities, including Dr. Dre, Leigh Bowery, JT LeRoy, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, David Bowie, Cameron Diaz, PJ Harvey, John Galliano, Björk, and Kate Moss. Her work has appeared in the American and British versions of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar as well as W magazine, Interview, GQ, Vanity Fair, Elle, and The Sunday Times. Kate Garner was expelled from high school at the age of 16 and became a runaway who joined The Children Of God. To escape the grasp of the cult she hitchhiked from London through Eastern Europe to India in 1970, where she lived for a year as a traveler before being located by her parents. She attended art school at Blackpool in the North of England and later moved to London, where she began to both photograph and model for up-and-coming magazines such as The Face and i-D. Kate Garner first came widely into the public eye as one-third of the 1980s avant-garde, new wave pop project Haysi Fantayzee, along with other members Jeremy Healy and Paul Caplin. Emanating from street art scenes such as the Blitz Kids that were cropping up in London in the early 1980s, Haysi’s music combined reggae, country, and electro with political and sociological lyrics couched as nursery rhymes. Catapulted to stardom by their visual sensibilities, Haysi Fantayzee combined their extreme clothes sense – described as combining white Rasta, tribal chieftain, and Dickensian styles – with a quirky musical sound comparable to other new wave musical pop acts of the era, such as Bow Wow Wow, Adam and the Ants and Bananarama. They appeared several times on the BBC Television program Top of the Pops. Despite being touted by Bowie producer Tony Visconti as the next big thing, the group quickly disbanded after releasing three hit singles “John Wayne Is Big Leggy”, “Shiny Shiny”, and “Holy Joe”, and an album, Battle Hymns for Children Singing, that went gold. Garner then returned to painting, photography, and video, launching a successful media arts career, starting with her collaboration with Sinéad O’Connor...
