A fine, clean impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper, the full sheet attached to the original support page with printed grey border rule. Toning from the original glue strip (1/8 inch) along the left sheet edge; the support sheet toned at the edges, not affecting the image sheet; otherwise in excellent condition. From 'Harlem as Seen by Hirschfeld', The Hyperion Press, New York, 1941. Image size 11 3/8 x 8 1/2 inches; sheet size 11 7/8 x 9 inches. Archivally sleeved, unmatted. 'Harlem as Seen by Hirschfeld', Al Hirschfeld's colorful depictions of the iconic characters of 1930s Harlem, is considered by many to be his finest work.

Hal Steward (Stuart) Wilcox was born in California on March 14, 1892. Wilcox used several aliases for his art works: Piko Siska, Hal Stuart, Michelle Stuart, and Harold Stuart Wilcox. He lived in Laurel Canyon (Los Angeles) in 1931-32 and then made a trip to Tahiti and the Cook Islands.
