Claude Weisbuch
'Il bouge sans arrêt' original signed lithograph poster after drypoint, 1960s

1969

About the Item

This poster is a lithographic enlargement of the dry point print 'Il bouge sans arrêt' by the French artist Claude Weisbuch. The image is an early example of his explorations into the nature of movement: in the image, the same model is seen from different vantage points - from behind, at a three-quarter view, etc. This shows Wesibuch grappling with how to portray the living model. Each iteration of the body and the face shows how the model changes in relation to the artist over the course of a single sitting, how each movement renders the subject of art impermanent. All the while, this adds a sense of dynamism and vitality to the sitter, showing them as alive and in the world. 29.88 x 20.75 inches, poster 32.13 x 23.38 inches, frame Signed and inscribed to David Barnett, lower right Inscribed "Agrandissement, pointe seche, il bouge sans arrêt" by the artist, en verso Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag mounting materials, UV5 Plexiglas to inhibit fading, and housed in a high-gloss black aluminium moulding. Claude Weisbuch was born in Thionville, France in 1927 and was a pupil at L' École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, France. As a painter, engraver, and exceptional lithographer, Claude Weisbuch has painted active motifs, such as musicians, horses, characters. Dominating in his work, by the relief and the velvety line which characterizes drypoint, his etchings are the strongest representations of his figures, intensely lively after 1960s. Using dark tones which express his sharp sense, Claude Weisbuch ceaselessly captures life's dynamics, as the pictorial, musical and literary expressions that are essentially human. Whether it is the impassioned violinist, the mercurial actor, or the sitter shrouded with silent intensity, they have all been rendered with Weisbuch's love for drama. The brushstrokes are sweeping and bold while the paint is fluid. His pictures, full of movement, give one the impression of time-lapsed motion, and display an expression of passionate humanity tinged with a unique energy.

'The Dealer' original signed color lithograph from the Gambler Series
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'The Dealer' is an original lithograph from John Doyle's 'Gambler' series. The suite included ten different prints, each image capturing the exhilaration and danger of the games of chance played by casino goers. In one of the prints, a woman pulls the lever of a slot machine; in another, men queue before a lottery ticket window. In 'The Dealer,' a man faces the viewer directly. His stern gaze is hidden behind dark glasses as he springs cards between his hands in a flurry of aces and spades. His clothes reflect both the fashion of the 1970s while also hearkening to the villains of Western films. All the while, he is framed from behind by the arch of a blackjack table, which is itself lined by glistening lights of the casino. 29.5 x 20.5 inches, artwork 37.75 x 28.75 inches, frame Signed "doyle" in pencil, lower right Entitled "Dealer" in pencil, lower left Series title "Gamblers" in pencil, lower left Edition "XXXIII/XL" (33/40) in pencil, lower left Publisher blindstamp, lower left Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting, UV Clear glass to inhibit fading, and housed in a maroon-tinted mock tortoise shell finish wood moulding with a gold finish bevel.
