David Hockney
Paper Pools

1980

About the Item

David Hockney (b.1937) is one of the most valuable, versatile, and distinctive British artists of the 20th century. The artist came to prominence in the 1960s with his depictions of quirky domestic scenes and queer relationships. He contributed to the emergence of Pop Art in England. Hockney has experimented with and mastered numerous art mediums, having worked with photography, collage, drawing, painting, set design, and printmaking. His style has evolved during his lengthy career, yet his work is always identifiable for a certain optimism and je ne sais quoi joy. In 1964, Hockney began painting pools, which have become the most significant and iconic motif in the artist's oeuvre. His depictions of swimming pools highlight the leisure and vibrancy of Southern California life. Although today such images don't feel as emblematic of Pop Art as compared to some of the work of his American contemporaries, they are remarkable for their simplicity and the era's interest in depicting scenes or elements of daily life. Hockney's images of swimming pools have a universal appeal. Not surprisingly these works have sold for millions of dollars. Check out some examples here, and here, and even photography Hockney's iconic 1972 painting "Portrait Of An Artist (Pool With Two Figures)" sold for a record $90.3 million at auction in 2018. David Hockney has exhibited internationally at prominent art institutions including the MoMA, the Royal Academy of Arts, and the National Portrait Gallery. This work, "Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book" is one of the most sought after prints Hockney has made. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Dutch Hearts
By Jim Dine
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Jim Dine was one of the key artists that defined American Pop Art in the 1960s. Like Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, Dine appropriated quintessential American images and icons. He used ubiquitous and familiar forms, like tools, food, and stylized clothing, as the basis for bold and colorful compositions inspired by Dada assemblage, Abstract Expressionism, and collage techniques. The "Heart" is the most celebrated icon in Dine's oeuvre. He uses its motif to explore pattern, color, and texture in both two-dimensions and sculpture. This is a classic and iconic example of Jim Dine's hearts from his most sought-after period. Questions about this piece? Contact us. "Dutch Hearts...
