G. Harvey
The Flower Cart

1988

About the Item

G. Harvey’s "The Flower Cart" is a luminous celebration of urban charm and human tenderness, set in a time when the pace of life moved slower and beauty bloomed on every corner. In this atmospheric piece, Harvey channels his signature warmth and glowing light to turn an everyday moment—a street-side flower vendor’s cart—into a timeless vignette filled with elegance and grace. The scene is set on a softly lit avenue, possibly in a turn-of-the-century cityscape. A richly adorned flower cart, brimming with colorful blossoms, becomes the heart of the composition. Bundles of roses, lilies, and wildflowers spill over the edges in a cascade of texture and hue. A lady, dressed in refined attire, pauses to examine a bouquet, while the vendor—perhaps an elderly gentleman or a young entrepreneur—stands nearby with quiet attentiveness. Around them, the city gently stirs: glowing lamplight reflecting off rain-slick streets, distant carriages and passersby moving in muted silhouette, and the golden tones of nearby storefronts embracing the scene in warmth. Harvey’s mastery lies in his ability to elevate the mundane into the poetic. His signature light—soft, golden, reflective—bathes the entire image in nostalgic serenity. The flower cart is not just a vendor’s stand; it is a symbol of joy, romance, and the fleeting beauty that graces ordinary life. Each petal and shadow speaks to the artist’s deep appreciation for detail and emotion. "The Flower Cart" invites us to pause, to breathe in a moment of simple pleasure, and to remember a time when connection was face to face and beauty was sold one bouquet at a time. For collectors, this piece represents G. Harvey at his most tender—romantic, refined, and quietly profound.

Original "He Is Risen" vintage poster for Mathers Work Incentive Program
Located in Spokane, WA
Original American work incentive poster: ‘HE IS RISEN”. Artist: Willared Frederick Elmes. This isn't actually a war/propaganda poster per se, but it was produced by Mather & Co. Elmes was an artist similar to Mather in that they were both prolific with their morale + work incentive posters in the 1930s. Elmes also created other pieces done for the early railway posters. The poster with the stained-glass panel in the back and the ray of light shining in is the last Mather & Company poster printed (1930). All others were printed in 1929 and earlier. The very last in the Work Incentive Mather’s posters...

"Under the Apple Tree", Figurative Chromolithograph after George Niles, 188/250
By Louis Prang
Located in Soquel, CA
Original chromolithograph by Louis Prang (German/American, 1823-1909) of L. Prang & Co. (American, founded 1860), after "Under the Apple Tree" by George E. Niles (American, 1837-1898). This late 19th century figurative chromolithograph depicts a small boy in a country setting and period dress under an apple tree, reaching into a barrel with a basket of apples spilling into the grass. A German style chromolithograph, this limited edition 188/250 print was created with heavy, oil-based inks which were applied in several layers to impart a texture similar to an original oil painting. Signed and dated in the plate "G.E. Niles 1867". Tag on verso with "Prang's American Chromos - Under the Apple Tree, after Niles - Chromolithographed and published by L. Prang & Co. ...Boston". Displayed in a rustic giltwood beveled frame. Image size: 9"H x 7.25"W. Louis Prang was a foremost lithographer and publisher in New York City from the mid to the end of the 19th Century. Born in Breslau, Germany to a father who was a calico printer, he was an apprentice to his father during his teen-age years and then spent five years as a journeyman, learning printing and dyeing and living in Austria, France and England. However, Prang's liberal political vliews caused him to be deported by the Prussian government during the Revolution of 1848, and fled via Bohemia and Switzerland to get to America. In 1850, Prang went to Boston, having stopped briefly in New York City, and became a publisher and taught himself wood engraving. In 1856, he turned to lithography in partnership with Julius Mayer. In 1860, he founded Louis Prang and Co., which was his own company and the first stiff competition to Currier and Ives. A primary reason for this competition was Prang's active imagination and energetic pursuit of his business. During the Civil War, he published maps and battle plans so that people at home could follow military movements. He also created printed card portraits of Union soldiers...
