About the Item

HENRI MATISSE, Le Cateau Cambrésis 1869 - Nice 1954 La Danse, 1938 Color lithograph from papier gouache-découpé. Bibliography: Claude Duthuit, Catalogue raisonné des ouvrages illustrés no. 67. (mm. 332x392). Off-text plate from Revue Verve vol. 1, no. 4. Perfect copy imprinted in 1938 by Fernand Mourlot for the publisher Tériade, Paris. In perfect condition with editorial fold and margins intact. On the verso: Le pas du patineur: 'Le Lancé' et 'Le Retenu'. Original color woodcuts, monogrammed in plate. Bibliography: C. Duthuit, 721/722. (mm. 205x147) and (mm. 198x151). Henri Matisse made La Danse in 1910, commissioned by Sergei Shchukin: a monumental masterpiece celebrating movement, primitive joy, and the power of color. The five nude figures, in a circle, dance on a bright green lawn under a deep blue sky, embodying the essence of the fauve vision. Almost thirty years later, in 1938, the publisher Tériade invited Matisse to reinterpret that work for Verve magazine. The artist thus produced a color lithograph that takes up the same composition, but reinterprets it in a more essential and graphic style. The figures, still in a circle, stand out against flat, contrasting backgrounds in a balance that anticipates his famous découpage. Two original woodcuts appear on the verso of the sheet, underscoring Matisse's interest in dialogue between different techniques. The '38 lithograph is a conscious quotation, a reflection on a theme that the artist still felt was alive, translated into a more mature, more synthetic, but equally vibrant language.
