Provenance: private collection - Richmond, VA; acquired from Graves Fine Art Gallery, Gordonsville, VA in 2010 (present day Graves International Art, St. Augustine, FL). Comes from Way's one volume "Memories of James McNeill Whistler, The Artist", (1912) (First edition), which consists of 38 prints: thirty-six lithographs, one etching, and one photogravure. Each work is printed in one color from one stone plate: black. "Lithograph No. I" has the printer's imprint lower right. Each work comes with its original tissue cover sleeve on verso. Old gallery information and price labels on each verso.
Biography:
James Abbott McNeill Whistler RBA (July 10, 1834 – July 17, 1903) was an American painter in oils and watercolor, and printmaker, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom. He eschewed sentimentality and moral allusion in painting and was a leading proponent of the credo "art for art's sake".
