About the Item
Silkscreen on vélin papier Ingres de chez Arjomari-Prioux paper. Inscription: signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued. Good condition. Notes: from the folio, Nous croyons en l'Europe, Etudes pour un projet de timbre, 1979. Published and printed by Éditions Sciaky, Paris, 1979. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), It was by listening to Mrs. Louise Weiss, at the opening of the Parliament of Europe, that I found some dazzling accents that brought me back to mind drawings. I felt very guilty because the dear great man had been dead since 1963. Having been able to obtain the kind permission of Mr. Edouard Dermit, heir of Jean Cocteau, I no longer hesitated, therefore, to make public these unpublished drawings. I also, through extreme complacency of Mrs. Louise Weiss, obtained the authorization to reproduce, in-depth, her historical text for the inauguration of the European Parliament whose terms had so well reminded me of these drawings of a Jean Cocteau, an ignored European, and proclaiming his faith in Europe. Our edition contains this speech and the famous series of drawings by Jean Cocteau that I had piously preserved for many years. —Mario Sciaky. Éditions Sciaky, hors commerce, all rights reserved, Paris 1979. It was printed on its presses, in silkscreen, DC examples, numbered from I to DC, on papier Ingres de chez Arjomari-Prioux, the boards are in canvas from Texlibris.
JEAN COCTEAU (1889–1963) was a French poet, playwright, novelist, designer, film director, visual artist and critic. He was one of the foremost artists of the surrealist, avant-garde, and Dadaist movements and an influential figure in early 20th century art. The National Observer suggested that, "of the artistic generation whose daring gave birth to Twentieth Century Art, Cocteau came closest to being a Renaissance man."

'Formal Samoan Meal', NYMoMA, Metropolitan Museum, National Gallery, SFAA, GGIE
By Marion Osborn Cunningham

Stamped, verso, with certification of authenticity for 'Marion Cunningham' (American, 1908-1948) and created in 1948.
Paper dimensions: 17.75 x 16 inches
A substantial and rare, mid-century silkscreen showing a Samoan family seated beneath a traditional tent of tapa cloth and being served by a young woman. To realize this complex work, Cunningham used as many as one dozen hand-drawn screens, each of which varied in pigment, hue and opacity. Created during the extraordinary creative ferment that characterized the last year of the artist's life, this work represents a remarkable achievement for both artist and medium.
Born in Indiana, Marion Osborn Cunningham moved to California in 1911. She first studied art with the American Impressionist, Ruth Heil Emerson, before continuing her education at Santa Barbara City College and receiving her Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University. She subsequently furthered her studies at the California School of the Fine Arts and at the Art Students League in New York City, where she met and married the American abstract artist Ben Cunningham.
