Caluppanus is a beautiful black and white burin on copper) on ivory-colored paper, realized at the end of XVI century by the Flemish artist Joan or Johannes Sadeler (Brussels, 1550 - Venice 1600). Signed on plate "I. Sadeler." on the lower right corner. at the center on lower margin " M. de Vos". Numbered with 14 on plate at the cenetr on lower margin. With a long inscription on plate on lower margin: "Haud procul Arverno latebras ingressus hiates Monstra Caluppanus perniciosa fugat. Exorat lapides, et abit rigor omnis in undas, Aegris prebet opem, sed prece, non pretio". In excellent condition, except for a minor stain on higher left coner and a usual yellowing of the paper due to the age. A beautiful wooden frame included, cm 25.4 x 1 x 29.3 This old master's original print with a lifetime impression and with a full mastery of this artistic medium, is from the series "Solitudo sive vitae patrum eremicolarum" published by Sadeler from drawings by Martin de Vos. A wonderful etching describing the life of the saint Caluppanus, born in 527 and Died in 576. He spent his early years in the monastery of India, where he so abstained from food as to be unable to perform his share of the ordinary work of the establishment. After a protest of the monks, he withdrew to a neighboring cave, where he built himself an oratory, here he occupied himself entirely with study and prayer, and is said to have vanquished persecuting evils spirits by using the sign of the cross and the Lord's Prayer. This scene is perfectly etched by Sadeler, in a meticulous Flemish style. Johannes Sadeler comes from one of the most renowned family of Flemish engravers, active in the 16th and 17th century. The best known is Gillis (Antwerp 1570 - Prague 1629), who stayed in Munich (1590, 1594) and in Rome (1593); from 1600 was active at the court of Prague. He was influenced by H. Goltzius; and made engravings of sacred and secular subjects, portraits, landscapes. Jan or Johannnes (Brussels 1550 - Venice 1600) was in Munich as a court engraver (1588-95) and then in Italy. He left prints of various subjects (series of the Seven Planets, 1585). We should also mention his brother Raphael (Antwerp around 1560 - Munich around 1628).

St. Simon from Les Grands Apôtres Debout Original 17th Century Etching
By Jacques Callot
Located in Soquel, CA
St. Simon from "Les Grands Apôtres Debout, Représentant Le Sauveur, La Bienheureuse Marie et Les Saints Apôtres" Original 17th Century Etching by Jacques Callot. This portrait of St. Simon depicts him standing in a street, holding a book and leaning on a saw. The saw is typical of St. Simon's depictions as he was said to have been martyred by being sawed in half. Very good impression of this print, with bold lines and high contrast. This leaflet contains the words "Callot fec." in the bottom right, shorthand for the Latin fecit, meaning Callot made this. This edition contains no publishers mark or numbering on the piece, indicating that it is from the first printing state. Jacques Callot was born in the Duchy of Lorraine around 1592 to an important family in the court. He started an apprenticeship as a goldsmith at the age of 15, but later began learning etching. He is known for his technical skill in etching and for developing the echoppe style etching needle. Callot's etchings featured religious figures as well as soldiers, common people, beggars, and court individuals. His series "The Miseries and Misfortunes of War," published while Lorraine was invaded during the Thirty Years War, later influenced Goya's "Los Desastres de la Guerra...
