About the Item
Sloan, John. BARBER SHOP. Etching and aquatint, 1915, (Morse 173), 3rd (final) state, Only 35 were printed, by Sloan. Signed in pancil, lower right. 10 x 12 inches (256 x 308 mm (plate), 13 3/4 x 16 1/2 inches (sheet).Printed in dark brown on wove paper. In Very Good condition except that the top 3/8 inches of the sheet was folded, apparently for framing. It is present, and there is adhesive residue to its recto. This is one of Sloan's largest plates, and his earliest use of aquatint.Because so few were printed, the work is scarce.

John Sloan
John Sloancame to New York in 1904 and worked for some time as a freelance illustrator. With Robert Henri, he organized an exhibition of a group of urban realist painters, known as "The Eight" or the "Ashcan School," who challenged traditional notions of art. Having moved to the Village in 1912, Sloan lived with his wife Dolly at 240 West 4th Street and at 88 Washington Place.
