Published by Le Vasseur et Cie, éditeurs, Paris; printed by Alfred Porcabeuf et Cie, Paris, December 5, 1935. Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album was completed to be printed on December 5, Nineteen Thirty-Five; for the text, on the presses of the maître imprimeur, Coulouma, in Argenteuil, H Barthélemy, director. Louis Icart's original color etchings were drawn in taille-douce on A. Porcabeuf et Cie, Paris. Justification of the draw, The print run of this edition was strictly limited to DXVII numbered examples, including XX examples from non-commercial collaborators. It has been numbered as follows: XXII examples on japon impérial, numbered from I to XXII, containing: an original composition in color, a sketch signed by the artist, a black suite of all the plates with remarks engraved with the dry tip, a gilded and eneré copper. XXXV examples on hollande van Gelder, numbered from XXIII to LVII, containing a black suite of all the planches with remarks engraved at the dry tip. CDXL examples on vélin de Rives filigrané, watermarked in our name and numbered, LVIII to CDXCVII. XX examples numbered A to T, printed on vélin de Rives, intended for collaborators of the book.
LOUIS ICART (1888-1950) was a French painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. Icart's style of painting was based on the French masters of the 18th century, such as Jean-Antoine Watteau, François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard. an. His drawings were influenced by Edgar Degas and Claude Monet; his rare watercolors bore features of the symbolists Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau. Many of his early atmospheric paintings are in shades of brown, gold, and red; however, his pictures became brighter during his career. Icart's depictions of women were mostly sensual, often erotic, but also always humorous and full of hinted or direct sexuality. In his pictures, beautiful courtesans frolicked on thick pillows with facial expressions full of passion, dismay or surprise. Horses, dogs or cats were often part of his subjects. His contributions to his field have been likened to Picasso's legacy in 20th-century art. Icart is one of France top Art Deco artist’s. His etchings reached their height of brilliance in this era of Art Deco, and Icart had become the symbol of the epoch.
