About the Publication: Les aventures d'Alice au pays des merveilles (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) was published in 1930 by The Black Sun Press, one of the most renowned avant-garde publishing houses of the early 20th century. Founded in Paris by Caresse and Harry Crosby, the press was dedicated to producing fine art and literary works of the highest quality, merging modernist literature with original artwork by leading artists of the time. Known for its luxurious materials and meticulous craftsmanship, The Black Sun Press published works by authors such as James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Ernest Hemingway, and Kay Boyle, alongside illustrated collaborations with artists including Marie Laurencin, Max Ernst, and Pavel Tchelitchew. The 1930 edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland marked one of the press's most iconic undertakings—transforming the whimsical Victorian narrative into a modernist visual and poetic experience. Laurencin's illustrations, characterized by soft pastels and graceful, dreamlike figures, imbued Carroll's tale with a lyrical femininity, harmonizing perfectly with the surreal and introspective spirit of interwar Paris. The publication exemplifies The Black Sun Press's synthesis of literature and art, representing the golden age of Parisian bookmaking where typography, design, and illustration merged into a unified artistic statement. About the Artist: Marie Laurencin (1883–1956) was a groundbreaking French painter, printmaker, and poet whose delicate yet radical redefinition of modern femininity reshaped the trajectory of 20th-century art. Born in Paris and educated at the Academie Humbert, she emerged as a rare female voice in the Parisian avant-garde, developing a signature style of fluid lines, soft pastels, and dreamlike figures. By the 1900s, she was part of the Montmartre and Montparnasse circles alongside Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Fernand Leger, and in dialogue with Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Her lyrical, romantic vision—termed "feminine Cubism"—infused modernism with grace and emotion in contrast to the angular rigor of her male contemporaries. Her art, defined by motifs of women, horses, and flowers, symbolized intellect, unity, and inner life. Exiled during World War I due to her marriage to German artist Baron Otto von Watjen, Laurencin refined her visual language into one of simplified elegance and poetic restraint. Returning to Paris in the 1920s, she became a leading portraitist for figures like Coco Chanel and designed for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, illustrating works by Paul Verlaine and Andre Gide. Her paintings evolved into meditations on beauty, solitude, and harmony, celebrating womanhood as a state of creative strength. Influencing later artists such as Sonia Delaunay, Francoise Gilot, and Helen Frankenthaler, Laurencin anticipated aspects of Color Field painting and modern minimalism. Her works reside in major museums worldwide, including the Musee Marie Laurencin in Tokyo, the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d'Orsay, and MoMA. The highest auction record for her work was achieved by Les deux amies (The Two Friends), which sold for $2,920,000 USD at Sotheby's, New York, on November 6, 2018, affirming her lasting legacy as one of modernism's most important and distinctive voices.
