About the Item
Landscape with Figures is a beautiful engraving, realized by the French painter and engraver Maurice Asselin, datable to the first half of the 20th century. The plate was engraved as etching and drypoint and, inside the matrix, on the lower left, there is the signature “M Asselin”. On the left, outside the matrix in pencil “5/35 M Asselin”. On the lower margin in black pen, there is a long dedication of the artist with greetings and thanks.
The state of preservation is very good, except for some stains for a light fungal foxing on the left margin of the paper. Furthermore, the imperfect inking of the matrix slightly stained the margins of the image.
Maurice Asselin is famous especially for his female figures, among which numerous nudes, often caught in scenes of maternity, in which he reached rare levels of delicacy, but also for the wonderful landscapes of Brittany, a region of France, to him very dear, where he has often stayed. He also traveled to Italy, in Anticoli-Corrado, a famous town of artists and models in the countryside of the region Lazio, near Rome. After the Italian experience, Asselin also traveled to London, where he exhibited his works in solo shows.
The landscape represented in this artwork should be Breton, especially for the majestic Gothic architecture on the background, referring to an unidentified cathedral.
This is a beautiful artwork, expressing the style of Impressionist landscapes typical of this famous French painter.

Maurice Asselin
Maurice Asselin is a painter and engraver, a member of the École de Paris. For the famous art historian, Bernard Dorival, Asselin was with André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Charles Dufresne, Paul-Elie Gernez and Henry de Waroquier, among the painters of the "realistic reaction" which to "idealism and photographic realism" of the academic tradition of the 19th century," prefer the frank realism of the Impressionists and the sincerity with which they questioned the nature. Against the unrealism of cubists, they pose as heirs of the independent masters of the third quarter of the 19th century. And Dorival strongly supports his statement by quoting our artist, "If you like painting, you will not only ask it to be a decoration for the walls of your home but first of all to be food for your life interior," thus professes Asselin who continues, "no brain combination, no theory can give birth to a work of art... Art springs from the marveled love of life."
