Milton Glaser
Vintage Bob Dylan Souvenir Poster (Milton Glaser Bob Dylan 1960s)

c.1967

About the Item

Original 1967 Milton Glaser Fold Out Poster for Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. Offset lithograph printed in colors 33 x 22 in (83.82 x 55.88 cm) Fold lines as issued; very good vintage condition. Description: This iconic, “psychedelic,” Milton Glaser poster for Bob Dylan’s “Greatest Hits” LP was released in 1967. Glaser was inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s self-portrait in 1957, altering it by adding rainbow-colored, kaleidoscopic curls on top of the dark and elusive silhouette. Echoing stylistic qualities of Art Nouveau and in line with his dictum “Just enough is more.” Milton Glaser also invented his own typeface for the single word “DYLAN.” Designed to be folded and packaged into each album, this poster became one of the most widely popular of all time. Legendary graphic designer, illustrator, and art director Milton Glaser created some of the most recognizable iconography in America today —including the iconic I ♥ N Y logo —and countless posters and ad campaigns. Glaser changed the face of commercial art in the 1960s and ’70s, breaking with the conventions of modernism and drawing inspiration from a wide variety of art-historical and pop-cultural sources, from Art Nouveau to comic illustration and Chinese drawings. As a co-founder of New York magazine, Glaser designed its signature header, and his brightly colored illustrations graced dozens of glossy magazine covers. His promotional poster for _Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hit_s —a simple silhouette of the artist’s head with a colorful mop of thick, wavy hair —was endlessly reproduced, and its psychedelic aesthetic came to define late ’60s visual culture.
