About the Item

This black-and-white lithograph, numbered 14/45, is the work of Orovida, whose real name is Camille Orovida Pissarro. The rectangular framing tightens the composition around three figures in profile: a seated human character, an anthropomorphized feline, and a sloth-like creature standing on its hind legs. The graphic treatment evokes the aesthetics of traditional engraving, where each surface is worked with an almost calligraphic rigor. The background, abstract and punctuated with irregular patterns, contrasts with the interplay of full and empty spaces, giving the scene a mineral texture and reinforcing the impression of timelessness. The work belongs to a symbolist vein, marked by narrative stylization and an evident influence from Asian pictorial traditions, where line dominates over modeling. A pivotal moment in Orovida’s artistic career came in 1924 when an exhibition of Chinese paintings and Japanese screens at the British Museum profoundly influenced her work. This encounter led her to explore Oriental subjects, particularly animals, which became a recurring theme in her etchings and paintings. The elongated and angular human anatomy suggests both anchoring and tension, while the detailed feline retains an abstraction that distances it from strict realism. The two figures’ gazes, aligned toward a common off-screen space, establish a contemplative dynamic, inviting viewers to question what lies beyond the visible. The triangulation of the three characters—the human reaching out to the sloth, which extends its paw in return, and the roaring feline—introduces a deeper narrative, exploring the relationships between man and animal, the wild and the civilized, the rational and the instinctive. As Gaston Bachelard wrote, «The animal is a concentration of nature, a focus of forces where man recognizes his energies.» This work seems to evoke a lost harmony, a return to an original state where the boundaries between species fade, suggesting a meditation on coexistence and duality. B I O - Orovida Camille Pissarro, who signed her works simply as "Orovida," deliberately omitting her illustrious surname, was a painter and printmaker of remarkable talent and independence. Born in Epping, Essex, she was the daughter of the artist Lucien Pissarro and his wife, Esther, and the granddaughter of the renowned Impressionist Camille Pissarro. Her artistic training began briefly under Walter Sickert in 1913, followed by studies with her father in Paris in 1914, where she first experimented with etching. Orovida’s career took a significant turn after her debut exhibition in 1921, which she shared with the French artist Marie Laurencin. Her work was exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, and she held several solo shows in London and North America. Orovida lived and worked in London, where she developed a distinctive style that blended Eastern aesthetics with Western techniques. Following her death in 1968, her legacy was celebrated through a memorial exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, in 1969, and a posthumous exhibition at the Leicester Gallery titled *Three Generations of the Pissarro Family*. Today, her works are held in numerous British and international collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, and the British Museum, attesting to her enduring influence and unique contribution to 20th-century art.

Born in Epping, England in 1893, she lived and worked predominantly in London where she became a prominent member of several British arts clubs and societies. She first learned to paint in the Impressionist style of her father, but after a brief period of formal study with Walter Sickert in 1913 she renounced formal art schooling. Throughout her career, Orovida always remained outside of any mainstream British art movements. Much to Lucien's disappointment she soon turned away from naturalistic painting and developed her own unusual style combining elements of Japanese, Chinese, Persian and Indian art. Her rejection of Impressionism, which for the Pissarro family had become a way of life, together with the simultaneous decision to drop her famous last name and simply use Orovida as a ‘nom de peintre’, reflected a deep desire for independence and distance from the weight of the family legacy. Orovida's most distinctive and notable works were produced from the period of 1919 to 1939 using her own homemade egg tempera applied in thin, delicate washes to silk, linen or paper and sometimes embellished with brocade borders. These elegant and richly decorative works generally depict Eastern, Asian and African subjects, such as Mongolian horse...
