Bacchanale au Hibou - Linocut Reproduction After Pablo Picasso - 1962

1962

About the Item

Bacchanale au Hibou is a color linocut reproduction realized after Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Realized in smaller size after a linocut by Pablo Picasso of 1959. Passepartout included. Very good conditions, except for minor signs of foxing on edges. The image shows vivid and fresh colors. This work is part of an outstanding edition realized by Gerd Hatje in Stuttgart in 1962, as German edition of the French one realized by Galerie Leiris and published by Edition Cercle d'Art. The Bacchanal was a subject often depicted by Picasso. The artist dedicated a vast production to these joyful festive themes taken from the Greek and Roman festivals which celebrated the god of wine, Bacchus, typically attended by only women who danced, played music, and drank wine. In this artwork we see an array of characters suspended in an exciting and animated atmosphere. Set before a majestic and enchanting landscape of mountain peaks, the composition creates a dymanic feeling of happiness and fun. Pablo Picasso is one of the key figures of modern art, regarded as the creator of Cubism. He made original artworks and developed new imagery and formal syntax. In addition to this, Picasso realized wonderful etchings and linocuts, which exemplify his immense talent also as a printmaker. Linocuts form a relatively small part of Picasso’s oeuvre as a printmaker, however some of his most extraordinary compositions were produced using this method in a short burst of activity between 1958 and 1963. The artist, at the age of 78, turned away from etching and lithography – his favourite means of graphic expression – and embraced the linocut technique.
