Pablo Picasso Peintre et Femme Cuillant des Fleurs (Painter and Woman Picking Flowers), 1970 showcases a beautifully crisp work of art that Picasso imaginatively creates. Picasso’s apt for detail is really shown in this work where each of the faces are not lost by the abstract quality. The painter on the left is mesmerized by the beauty of his muse directly posing nude in front of him. His severely emphasized hand holds up a paintbrush as if guiding the audience where to look. As our eyes wander over to the elaborately drawn woman where her facial features depict a Picasso-esque face—strong nose, slightly parted lips, and beautiful almond eyes. She poses in such intricate manners as if she was once a dancer or acrobat. There are tiny flower petals laid and strewn around her hand. She is seen reaching perpendicular to the ground to pick these flowers. You can sense that her movements are graceful and nimble even as her bodily form beautifully contorts.

Pablo Picasso
One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.
“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.
Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. The bird is Georges Braque's calling card. When the 70-year-old artist was commissioned to create monumental decorations for the Louvre, he chose the bird as his subject. This winged animal appears again and again in his oeuvre, but its representation is noteworthy in this print. To those who would say that Braque is not a draftsman, Dora Vallier writes, "for [him], drawing is not a means of giving outward appearance to forms but of showing what lies within." Along the same lines, Braque himself says, "Forget things, only remember their relationship." These two statements encourage thoughtful viewing.
Coming back to its nest and hatched egg, a great black bird is hardly visible against the dark green of its home and the brown leaves behind. Rather than spend time on the details, Braque emphasizes the spatial arrangement of the scene. Everything is compressed down to one level; the curtain of heart-shaped leaves blends together as it falls toward the nest. Braque sees how the tree, nest and bird interrelate, and this entwined relationship is what he chooses to show.
Created circa 1950, this original color etching is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 281/300 in pencil in the lower left margin. The edition was printed by Atelier Krommelinck, Paris on Rives paper, and published by Maeght, Paris.
