Rolf Weijburg
''Local Beauties 3 - Ilha do Ibo'' Color etching of woman in Mozambique, Travel

1996

About the Item

The memories, notes and photographs that Rolf Weijburg takes with him from his distant travels are the sources of inspiration for his work. The etchings he creates are characterized by the details of flora and fauna, architecture and culture, landscapes and maps. Together they give an idea of the area Weijburg has visited. He tells the stories about his travels in his etchings. After several years of traveling, Weijburg began work in 1986 on ‘L'Afrique Périphérique - Een Atlas van de Eilanden rond Afrika’. Using the islands as a magnifying glass of Africa, the project allowed him to work for a long time on a large series of African-inspired color etchings. Rolf Weijburg traveled to all the archipelagos and isolated islands around Africa. He charted these mostly unknown areas in a special and unique way. Subtle references to the colonial past are incorporated into Weijburg's maps. Although the artist took the necessary poetic liberties, he did not violate the topographical facts. The color etchings made following these travels were awarded the Nederlandse Grafiekprijs in 1992. Since 2002 Rolf has been working on his most recent project: ‘An Atlas of the World's Smallest Countries’, a series of color etchings about the smallest countries in the world. Rolf Weijburg moved to Utrecht in 1970 to study Social Geography. Although Weijburg's fascination with maps was partially satisfied with the course Cartography, his interest in foreign countries proved to be too great to be satisfied by this study. After a year he quit Social Geography for art school and traveled regularly during this period of his studies. He specialized in the etching technique and graduated from the Monumental Department in 1976. Works by Rolf Weijburg can be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the ING Collection, the Drents Museum Assen and Rabobank Nederland, among others. ''Local Beauties 3 - Ilha do Ibo'' has an edition of 50.

  • ''Musis Sacrum'' Hand-colored etching with Gold Leaf, An Ode to Music
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Different worlds are melted together in the remarkable etches of Dutch artist Gea Karhof. Ancient cultures go hand in hand with 20th century icons. It is possible to see Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse or Superman swimming among oriental figures. On the many journeys to Greece, Nepal, Japan and Egypt amongst other countries, Gea gets inspired for her work by the oriental impressions. The hand-colored etchings are like dreams, in which differences in time and place disappear, while that seems perfectly logical. Gea Karhof combines her own childhood memories and travel experiences with general history, so that Gea’s etchings at first sight appear to be historical documents. Each time, all elements come together under a larger theme that forms the basis for her work. ‘’Subjects present themselves; I am never consciously looking for the’’ says Karhof. ''Musis Sacrum'' is a great examples of Gea's fascination of the language of music. Music is an abstract expression of art; only our hearing is directly involved. Must also has its own unique system of notation. The music score of ancient and modern-day cultures is the subject of a lot of her prints. Exploring with the will to fathom takes time. For example, the complex etching ''Musis Sacrum'' required months of preparation. This etching bears the name of, and its main form is the contours of the Arnhem theater (the Netherlands) where many concerts, including world music, are programmed. The print is populated by a celestial orchestra in which Karhof's childhood heroes Superman and Batman play along, nine Greek muses and a nine-piece world orchestra that makes music at the foot of the building. In this orchestra, a serious, harp-playing angel from the Italian Renaissance makes music with Thai instrumentalists and a mischievous-looking Mickey...

    Located in Berkeley, CA
Kota Ezawa recreates animated sequences from television, cinema, and art history. He uses basic digital drawing and animation software to create slide projections, light boxes, collages, and prints. In the vein of Warhol, his highly stylized facsimiles of familiar and often infamous images emphasize the distance between the viewer and the depicted figures that feature so prominently in America’s collective memory. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the San Francisco Museum of Art, California among others. The artist is represented by the Cheryl Haines Gallery...
