Rembrandt van Rijn
17th century etching Rembrandt biblical scene crucifixion figures

1641

About the Item

Rembrandt's print 'Christ Crucified Between Two Thieves: an oval plate' is one of the most captivating of the artist's oeuvre. Etched to an oval rather than a rectangular plate and then enhanced with drypoint, the composition shows Christ at the center, illuminated from above as though he himself is the light illuminating the scene. He is flanked on either side by the two thieves, and below groups of huddled figures mourn and observe. The print is noted for its especially intricate iconography, and may represent the exact moment of Christ's death. Rembrandt may have been inspired by the text from Matthew 27:46-54 when Christ cried out, “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” Rembrandt drew heavily on biblical sources in his work, as well as being influenced by other Baroque contemporaries. The nature of the media meant it was possible for Rembrandt to make continuous alterations (which he did over a several-year period), adding further etching and dry point, changing the composition of the picture and making the final image darker and more chaotic. etching and drypoint in black on cream laid paper; third state of three 1641 ca. 1820 impression 5.25 x 3.75 inches, plate 15.75 x 14.5 inches, frame Overall good condition; some wrinkles in upper corners; some light discoloration and foxing Presented in a gold-finish wood frame and mounted to 100% rag cream matboard and protected behind glass; framed to conservation standards using archival materials. Ref: Bartsch 79 i/ii; Hind 173; Biorklund-Barnard 41-2; Usticke 79 i/iii; New Hollstein 196 i/iii. Rembrandt van Rijn (15 July 1606 – 4 October 1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age when Dutch Golden Age painting, although in many ways antithetical to the Baroque style that dominated Europe, was extremely prolific and innovative. Having achieved youthful success as a portrait painter, Rembrandt's later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardships. Yet his etchings and paintings were popular throughout his lifetime, his reputation as an artist remained high, and for twenty years he taught many important Dutch painters. Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are exemplified especially in his portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate biography, in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with the utmost sincerity. In his paintings and prints he exhibited knowledge of classical iconography, which he molded to fit the requirements of his own experience; thus, the depiction of a biblical scene was informed by Rembrandt's knowledge of the specific text, his assimilation of classical composition, and his observations of Amsterdam's Jewish population. Because of his empathy for the human condition, he has been called "one of the great prophets of civilization."

This is an original drypoint and aquatint artwork by Jacques Villon. The artist signed in pencil on the lower right. As well as signed in plate at the top right of the image. This is a wonderful artwork of different intaglio processes being brought together in a beautiful almost seamless harmony. The thin pencil like markings and hair detailing are made using the Drypoint printmaking method. Whilst the color details around the girls are made using the Aquatint etching method. Jacques Villon shows his skills as a printmaker with the way these pieces line up perfectly and with how clean the rest of the plate is around the girls. Catalogue Raisonne E101, pg. 66-67 (Ginestet & Pouillon. It depicts two young girls. 15" x 11 1/2" art 25 1/8" x 20" frame French painter, printmaker and illustrator. The oldest of three brothers who became major 20th-century artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp, he learnt engraving at the age of 16 from his maternal grandfather, Emile-Frédéric Nicolle (1830-94), a ship-broker who was also a much appreciated amateur artist. In January 1894, having completed his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, he was sent to study at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris, but within a year he was devoting most of his time to art, already contributing lithographs to Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Assiette au beurre. At this time he chose his pseudonym: Jack (subsequently Jacques) in homage to Alphonse Daudet’s novel Jack (1876) and Villon in appreciation of the 15th-century French poet François Villon...
