About the Item
A poignant image of children sining in a choir, gut with gas masks hanging on the wall behind them at the right side of image. Rare image of this World War II era image.
A fine impression in good condition with some visible sign of darkening within the mat opening. Thi is offered in the original mat with notes. It is marked as a trial proof from the 8th state. Full margins. Signed and titled in pencil.
Reynold Weidenaar (1915-1985) was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute in the 1940's. Weidenaar was one of earliest people in the United States to rediscover and revive the art of mezzotint printmaking. He spent considerable time experimenting not only with techniques, but also in designing and hand-making the tools he used to create his prints.
In 1944 he received a Guggenheim fellowship followed by a Louis Comfort Tiffany scholarship in 1949. Also in 1949, he was elected to the National Academy. In 1950 the Society of American Etchers awarded him the John Taylor Arms Prize.

Reynold Weidenaar

Anton Refregier (March 20, 1905 – October 10, 1979) was a painter and muralist active in Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project commissions, and in teaching art. He was a Russian immigrant to the United States.
Among his best-known works is his mural series The History of San Francisco, located in the Rincon Center in downtown San Francisco, California. It depicts the city's history across twenty seven panels that he painted from 1940 to 1948.
Life and early career
Refregier was born in Moscow and emigrated to the United States in 1920. After working various odd jobs in New York City, he earned a scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design in 1921. After finishing school, Refregier moved back to New York in 1925. To earn a living, Refregier worked for interior decorators, creating replicas of François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard paintings...
