Modern Interior Prints
MODERN STYLE
The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.
Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.
The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.
Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

Painter, printmaker, illustrator, graphic designer and art director, Roy Carruthers was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and first studied at the Port Elizabeth Technical College Art School. From 1956, he worked as an art director and graphic designer in South Africa and, after 1960, in London. In 1968, he immigrated to the United States and worked in the advertising industry in New York. In 1974, Carruthers started his own graphic design firm while pursuing his career as a fine artist producing original paintings, drawings and etchings. His collaboration with Editions Press in San Francisco produced both sculpture and color lithographs, of which this work is a pristine example. He also maintained an academic career, teaching graphic techniques at Manhattan's School for the Visual Arts.
Over the course of a distinguished career, Roy Carruthers exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators (1973). His work continued to be exhibited in South Africa and the United States and throughout Europe. In 1982, he returned to South Africa as a guest of the South African Government and was honored with a touring museum exhibition of his work. About the Artist:
Kenneth Miller Adams, born in Kansas in 1897, began his art career in Topeka in 1913, studying under artist G.M. Stone. He later continued his education at the Art Institute of Chicago before serving in World War I. After his service, Adams studied at the Art Students League in New York City and then traveled abroad to immerse himself in Italian and French art.
In 1924, Adams returned to Kansas, where his friend Andrew Dasburg encouraged him to move to Taos, New Mexico. There, Adams became the youngest and final member of the Taos Society...

ARTIST BIO: Originally from the North East of England, Gavin graduated in Fine art in 2000, and has been building his portfolio as an artist specialising in painting and screen printing - often combining the two, which helps communicate his chosen narrative. Gavin uses both vivid colours and expressive strokes to create engaging and lively pieces - his recent painting series ‘Landscapes of the Mind’ used the fluidity and movement of the paint to convey how an environment can effect ones state of thinking. Alongside his painting, Gavin is an established screen-printer exhibiting at many galleries across the U.K. and with new clients in New York his international profile is starting to expand. A regular at the Affordable Arts Fair, Gavin was one of 20 artists chosen to work alongside Film Four for an exhibition at Somerset House. His screen-prints often depict colourful, nostalgic images. Iconic designs which are humorous ornamentation and invite an opening for conversation. Gavin takes an original painting and creates many separate layers of half tones to screen-print by hand the final piece. Using this method he captures many textures and depths of colour within a piece of work. He recently designed and created a piece of work for the charity Help Refugee's 'Choose Love' campaign in conjunction with Printclub and the celebrated designer Katharine Hamnett, highlighting the current plight of refugees. These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.).
Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel.
