About the Item

Balthazar Solvyns European Buildings in Calcutta 13.25” x 19” c1796 This is an extremely rare 1st Proof etching from Solvyns first publication, A Collection of Two Hundred and Fifty Coloured Etchings: Descriptive of the Manners, Customs and Dresses of the Hindoos. Calcutta, 1796, 1799. Plate 1 in the book and titled European Buildings in Calcutta. The etching, on incredibly fine paper, has at some point been laid to another sheet of paper to protect it. A small section of the sky in the etching is missing to the top right and corner. The fact that this print has been carefully restored highlights its rarity. The print would be fantastic framed.
