About the Item

Superb black and white etching with fresh impression, wide margins, printed on laid paper. An inscription at the lower center reads: “A. Canal f.”; at the lower right: “E 5”. Bromberg Second state on two, Montecuccoli, Third state on three. In excellent conditions, except for some very light traces of oxidation and some ripples on the lower left corner. A wonderful etching of a view of a town on a river bank. On the farther bank of the river, there are some houses and a water mill. In the foreground, on the right, there is a wooden plank bridge and a man. On the left, by the river, there is a group of figures with a mule. Antonio Canaletto (Venice, 1697 - 1768) was the head of the "Venetian Vedutisti" in the eighteenth century. He began to experiment with the etching technique together with his nephew Bernardo Bellotto in the early 1740s. Canaletto made only thirty three etchings in total, etched on plates of two different sizes.Thirty-one of all prints were published together sometime after 1744 in the print suite "Views, some taken from nature, others imaginary", dedicated to ‘Signor Giuseppe Smith, Console di S. M. Britannico’, who was appointed to the position of Consul the same year; the set was probably issued before the artist left for England in 1746. Smith probably commissioned and financed Canaletto’s experiments.Indeed, he had among his clients the royals of Liechtenstein and Joseph Smith, banker and merchant, and then English consul in Venice, a decisive person for his career as it was Smith himself to introduce the artist to the environment of the rich and high-class English collectors.Many of Canaletto's etchings are held at the Print Room in Windsor.
